A Play for Christmas

Every few years, my church has a little Christmas program where all the kids in the church get up and say a little poem or sing a song. This program gets longer and longer every year because we have such a large number of children in our congregation.

This year, I decided that I would take all four of my children and seven of my eight nieces and nephews and consolidate them all into groups. I wrote short five minute skits for them to perform. The first one is one based on the ever popular topic "going to service or going to party". The four teens that we have in our group will perform this short comedy and that will take care of that. They all were given speaking roles and it hopefully, this will help cut back on the tediousness of sitting through a dozen speeches.

The rest of the group, which ranges between ages eleven down to age two, are going to act out the parable of THE GOOD SAMARITAN. I know that this is not a traditional Christmas story, but I felt that it would be a good story of compassion to share during this holiday season. There is only one speaking role. The narrator will tell the story and the rest of the children will act it out as he/she talks. Even my little two year old son will have a role.

I am sharing this with you because I know that there will be a lot of us that will be sitting in services over the next couple of weeks listening to child after child after child get up in front of the congregation to say a a poem, and many of those children will be under the age of three. All they will be able to say is "Merry Christmas". I thought that since this is a website FULL of wonderful writers, I would plant this seed and see where it goes. This idea could give us a chance to not only cut back on the timeless tradition of long Christmas program/pageants filled with dozens of little faces smiling through speeches that barely understand but also give the writer in you a chance to contribute your talent towards writing something that will interest, entertain, and biblically educate the youth in your church/community.

The Bible is packed full of wonderful parables that can be turned into skits to fit almost every occasion. All youhave to do is read and get those creative juices flowing.

If any one wants to sneak a peek at mine.  I'd be more than happy to email you a copy.  Just click contact Nayberry and let me know.  After all, this is the season for sharing.

Merry Christmas to everyone on hub-pages. I hope that you and yours have a safe and joyous holiday season.

Tootles!!
