St. Nicholas lived in what is Turkey now in the 3rd Century. The transform of a benevolent cleric from a believer of the Church, a patronage of the poor, someone persecuted and jailed by Roman Conquerers to the Fairy Talish and twinkle eyed Santa Claus is as drastic as anything in history and folklore can be. And like all folklore the truth has been embellished to give it a new form and audience!

This is something that can truly be attributed to cinema, literature and media of the 19th and 20th Century and most impotantly a poem by Clement Clark Moore "Twas The Night Before Christmas". However, much before this elvish figure came into being, St. Nicholas was revered in America as Europeans in the "New World" worshipped him in various forms and placed small offerings in stockings before Christmas. In the poem "Twas The Night Before Christmas", Clement Clark Moore first gave the names to the reindeers which drove Santa's Sleigh and formed a picture in the poem of a twinkle-eyed, pot bellied jovial gift giver. Santa and his reindeers have since been part of folk lore.
