Jesus Christ's Last Days and Deeds
77Preface
This is such a reverent subject to present. I would have loved to tell the story by pictures alone, but after prayer and much pondering, I felt I needed to quote some scriptures and even comment briefly on some topics. I am thankful that I was able to present this hub and share it with others. I learned a lot from putting this together.
I tried to link to the actual scripture in the King James Version of The Bible, but the limitations of this site does not allow excessive links, Sorry, but you can go to http://scriptures.lds.org/en/nt/contents for easy access to them.
Christ Life
Christ's life on earth was an example to us. He taught us how we should live through his perfect example.
The last days of his life and through out his resurrection, he taught us many truths. As we look at the last days of his life and study the aspects of those last days, there is a lot that we can learn about him and God.
Through the first three years of his life, he taught and established the ordances and works that were essential to commit ourselves to him to be able to recieve his grace and be saved.
During the last week of his life, he set in order the process that by which he could over come and by which salvation could be given to us.
Let us look at the last week of his life as a mortal (mortal meaning being able to die.)
Palm Sunday
"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass." (Zech 9:9)
Jesus fulfills the prophecy by Zechariah. He boldly makes his statement to all that he is the Son of God. His disciples and followers take palm leaves and lay them down before him, announcing his arrival.
Jesus Cleanses The Temple
Jesus Christ shows his ownership of the temple and removes the money exchangers from it.
"And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." (Matt 21:13)
After which the blind and the lame came into him at the temple where he healed them.
Parables and Teachings Given At This Time
- Parable of the two sons (Matt 21:29-31)
- Parable of the unrighteous husbandmen - which shows that through rejection of the Son, the kingdom of God would be taken away from the Isrealites and given to another nation which brought forth righteous fruits.
- Parable of the King's son - Many are called but few are chosen. (Matt 22:1-14)
- First and Second Greatest Commandments - Love the Lord with all thy heart. Love your neighbor as thyself. (Matt 22:37-40)
- Prophecies that the end of the earth (or second coming) will occur after the gospel of Jesus Christ is taught to all the nations of the world. (Matt 24:14)
- Parable of the fig tree - That you may know of the season of the second coming (Matt 24:32-33)
- Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matt 25:1-13)
- Parable of the Talents (Matt 25:14-30)
Last Supper and Institution of The Sacrament
Jesus kept the passover and had the passover feast of unleaven bread with his apostles.
As they were eating Jesus takes bread, blesses it, and breaks it. He then said to the apostles, "Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." (Matt 26:26-29)
Jesus Washing The Apostles' Feet
After the feast, Jesus washed the apostles feet. He taught them that the greatest among them would be the most humble and would serve others. Greatness is humility and service.
The Garden of Gethsemany
After the feast of the Passover, Jesus and his disciples walk to the Mount of Olives, and entered the Garden of Gethsemane. He left all the disciples at the entrance gate except Peter, James and John. He explained to Peter, James and John that his heart was full of sorrow and very heavy. He left them and went went to prayer, where he fell to his face and prayed, "...saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And there appeared an angel into him from heaven, strenghtening him. An being in an agony he prayed more earnestly" and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow," (Luke 22:39-45)
The accounts of this in Matthew and Mark, has Christ going and praying three times unto God about this.
The fact that Jesus was is such agony that he is to have sweated blood, shows that pain and agony he went through for this hour. Many feel that this was the point that he suffered and may have actually took upon himself the sins of all mankind, - this being reason for his suffering.
Trail by Pilate
Jesus was brought up before Pilate as a lamb to slaughter. Jesus held his peace and allowed the mock trial to preceed. He was doing the Father's will at this time. He knew he had to over come all things, he would have to be put unjustly to death, so that he could resurrect and over come even death. He knew he was the unblemished lamb to be sacrificied for sin. That through him, all mankind would receive resurrection and salvation.
The Cruxifiction
The cruxifiction was a dark time of the world. The world rejected their savior and killed him. The earth rumbled and there was darkness over the whole earth.
Jesus Christ, calls to his father "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachtlhani?" which interpreted means My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me. (Mark 15:34) (Note: Eloi, may actual have been Elohim, the Hebrew name of God and which may be spelled Eloi in other languages.)
Jesus feeling very, very alone at the time of his death, this was a deed that he had to overcome by himself. With no angels to comfort him, he feels forsakened, and alone. Then Jesus cries in a loud voice that it is done, and voluntarily allows his spirit to slip away from his dying body.
The Burial
After his death, some disciples were able to obtain Jesus body, and prepare it for a proper burial. He was laid in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and a stone was rolled into the doorway.
The Pharasees, having remembered what Jesus said about coming to lfe again in three days, went to the Roman leaders and had two guards placed on watch to assure that no one would steal the body to claim that he resurrected.
The Period of Death
Jesus was dead for approximately three days. He told the thief next to him during the cruxification that he would see him that day in paradise. (Luke 23:43)
The first epistle of Peter sheds some light on what Jesus Christ did during the time that he was dead in paradise.
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water" (1 Pet 3:13-20).
Jesus went into the spirit world, otherwise known as Paradise and Spirit Prison. There he started the teaching of the people who were dead i.e. those who died in the flood at the time of Noah. The people there in spirit prison because they had not had a chance to receive the gospel yet. They then would have the chance to accept his gospel and receive salvation and no longer be in prisoned. The gosple would be taught to everyone, especially those who had never had the opportunity to hear or learn of Jesus Christ while alive on earth. Thus, removing them from spirit prison because they have learned the gospel of Jesus Christ and being able partake in his salvation.
This is very vital to us to know that any one who does not receive the gospel of Jesus Christ during their life on earth will have the opportunity to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ in the spirit world, after they die, and are awaiting resurrection.
"For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit." (1 Pet 4:6)
The Resurrection
On the third day after his death, being Sunday morning, Mary went to the tomb to see what had happened to Christ's body. Having seen the rock that was rolled away, and the body missing, Mary grieved. Hearing a person, she ask what had been done with the body, hoping her plea would persuade the person to take her to the body. After hearing the voice speak, she recognizes the voice and turns quickly to see Jesus. What a beautiful sight it would have been.
The grave has lost its sting, and will deliver up its dead. "For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (1 Cor. 15 21-22.)
The promise of resurrection is given to everyone who has every lived on earth. No longer has death, a strong hold over us. Jesus over came death, so that we may live again, too.
His Teachings After His Resurrection
Jesus, after his resurrected commanded his apostles to go forth unto all the world, and preach the gospel. And everyone who believed were to be baptized into salvation. The apostles were personal witnesses of Jesus Christ, his life, his death, and his resurrection. They were to testify into all the world that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that he lives, and that we all can receive eternal salvation through him.
The Ascension
"And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1:9-11)
My testimony
This is my testimony that I know that these things a true. That Jesus Christ lives. He is my personal Savior who I follow and love. I have had the witness of the Holy Spirit bear to me of His divinity. I know that through prayer and studying His gospel, all other can know of the valitaty of all these things. I pray that all will have this desire to study and pray to find this witness for themselves, that all may know of these truths.
I leave this in the name of Jesus Chirst, Amen
