Chronic Pain Relief - A Guide To Feeling Great
59A complete guide to the different types of chronic pain relief.
Chronic pain relief is something that many people need at some point during their life to relieve extreme pain. Chronic pain is not limited to being caused by one single type of disease or injury, but it can be caused by a multitude of different physical conditions. The basic definition of this type of pain is "pain that is long-lasting" and results in long term suffering. It is usually characterised by lasting at least three months, but it can last for six months of more. For people suffering from chronic pain it often feels like there is nothing which can be done to make the pain go away, and as such it can be an extremely debilitating condition with a serious impact on that person's quality of life. There are actually many ways in which you can achieve relief, which I will outline in this article.
Many doctors, scientists and medical professionals prefer not to use the term "chronic pain relief" when describing solutions to the condition type I have described above. What they prefer to call it is "pain management". The reason for this is that there generally is no complete cure or solution that eliminates chronic pain completely, so the best thing to do for a patient is to create a way to manage the pain and make it as durable as is possible. There are three main areas in which professionals agree that the pain can be managed, and these are pharmacologically (ie. through the use of drugs), physically (ie. through treatment such as physiology), and psychologically. The first consideration of a doctor is usually to provide some kind of pharmaceutical solution to reduce the effects of pain.
There are several drugs which are commonly prescribed to provide chronic pain relief in affected patients. Probably the most popular is paracetamol, which provides direct pain relief to the affected areas of the body, and can be taken in 1mg up to four times a day. Where paracetamol is too weak to effectively treat the pain, there are also anti-inflammatory drugs which offer more powerful pain relief. They are also effective because they suppress inflammation which gives them a healing effect on the patient, however they are not suitable for long-term usage or for certain kinds of patients (those with kidney problems or severe asthma) because they can cause stomach irritation over time. For long-term usage where anti-inflammatories and paracetamol are ineffective, there are also other possible solutions such as anti-convulsants, anti-depressants and, for certain cases, opioids will also be a suitable form of treatment.
Other types of treatment can include physical exercises as outlined by a physiologist, which are designed specifically for each patient, to treat the affected area of their body. As well as physical treatment, mental care can also be recommended to manage persistent pain. In all cases if you think you might be suffering from this condition you should consult a doctor immediately to be put on a program of chronic pain relief.
