People have always been fascinated by time; without keeping track of the time, it would be virtually impossible to plan productive, efficient lives. So many aspects of our daily lives revolve on the schedules accommodated by time that most of us would be at a real loss without a means to measure it by.

These characteristics and general fascination with time make the popularity of chronograph watches easy to understand. Since chronos means "time" and graph means "writing," it's obvious that chronograph watches are time telling devices that not only display the time, but that can measure it in a number of different - and incredibly precise - ways.

The History Of Chronograph Watches

The first patent for an authentic chronograph watch was issued to a Frenchman named Rieussec in the year 1821. His design bore the official moniker "chronograph" on its face, and is the design which all future incarnations of the watch would be modeled after. Although this first version of the chronograph watch functioned approximately the same way as current versions of it do, it did not gain any true popularity for many years. For whatever reason, the general public did not have an overwhelming need for the features of chronograph watches until the early twentieth century or so.

Later versions of chronograph watches contained various different styles and types of dials that were used to measure time in different ways. The most common dial found on these watches is one typically located near the nine that continuously displays the passing seconds, affording the wearer with an incredibly accurate estimation of the current time. More complex chronograph watches include three or even four separate dials which measure different aspects of time; by activating a particular dial, the wearer can measure the duration of virtually any event imaginable.

The first chronograph wristwatch was introduced in the year 1910. As time went by, additional technical advances occurred in the design of chronograph watches. One of the most notable of these advances occurred in the year 1933, when the first waterproof chronograph watches were introduced. Since then, these watches have served many valuable purposes for people who wear them; they have also provided a very distinct fashion statement for those attempting to affect a particular look, or for those who wish to accentuate their wardrobe in an elegant way.

How Chronograph Watches Are Used

Since their inception, chronograph watches have been used to measure time in various different ways. During the initial period of their popularity at the beginning of the twentieth century, these watches were favored by sports participants and members of the military. In both instances, chronograph watches were valuable tools for measuring critical aspects involved in both vocations. It wasn't unusual at all to attend a track event - or witness a military procedure - in which one or more people referred to their chronograph pocket watches to measure different statistics.

Who Benefits The Most From Using Chronograph Watches?

Today, people in the military and those involved in various types of sports continue to benefit from the use of chronograph watches; however, they provide excellent benefits for many others, as well. People who participate in racing of different kinds - whether it be car racing, horse racing or any other different example - often rely on chronograph watches to get an accurate idea of times and whether any records have been broken. Divers rely on chronograph watches for a very important reason: these watches can be set to let them know how much time they have left underwater before their oxygen supply runs out.
