Cigarettes vs. Marijuana
85Why is cigarettes legal and marijuana not?
I'm a very inquisitive person. I always want to know what's the purpose or the reason that things happen and is the way that it is. I consider myself a smart person, yet still, a lot of things puzzle me.
For instance, why is that cigarettes are legal and marijuana is not? Don't get it twisted this is not a matter of who smokes it or not, nor am I going to start a LEAGALIZE MARIJUANA rally in the streets, but come on. This is not rocket science! Cigarettes are clearly more harmful than marijuana. They contain over 4000 toxic chemicals and components combined. One cigarette contains:
- Carbon Monoxide
- Arsenic
- Ammonia
- Butane
just to name a few. These chemical when combined temporarily increases:
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
which then strains the heart and blood vessels and may eventually leads to heart attack and stroke.

Putting fair legalities on Marijuana
Marijuana is not for everyone just like alcohol, and yet marijuana is illegal. No one really seems to acknowledge the fact that unlike alcohol, marijuana is all natural. In North America you must be of legal age (19) to drink. Drinking and driving is also illegal and may cost you your licence, for life. With that being said, why doesn't marijuana have the same legalities as alcohol? Is it because the people in power can't find a way to take total control, so they alone can monopolize on it? I'm just saying........

a big reason marijuana is not legal is because it dates back to prohibition. Tobbacco was grown a lot more and people were smoking it making it more profitable for tax reasons. if we legalize marijuana there is a lot more than the positive aspects like preventing cancer, its how do we justify this to our youth. an eleven year was severly sick, this was a big article, she had cancer and did not have any desire to eat. she took what she retained in health class and pot was the only way to save her life, but she was too scared, and she needed the pot to spark her apetite back so what happens? she ended up dead. You see we can not just sell things that we dont want our kids to do and justify it by putting out a warning label. However it would help bring the econmy back slowly, but picture how much more protests would go on, immigration is bad now imagine after its legalized. It is a touchy subject and I dont mean to play devils advocate but like every other social issue there are two sides to every argument. I hope you enjoyed
Thanks guys for the comments. Parandroid at one time I would have agreed with you that marijuana is enjoyed more by the African-American communities but I've grown and seen a lot and surprisingly it's enjoyed a lot in the white communities as well. mike20325 you raised a good point. There is two sides to every argument and it is a touchy subject. Your not playing devil's advocate. You have a right to your own opinion.
Marijuana should definitely be legal. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
I just found this Hub after I posted in the forums....cheeck it out. The same convo is going on there. http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/14548#post181990
C.Ferreira thanks for your response. I followed the link back to the forum and you had a nice break down of how much money would be going back into the economy. Seems like you should be controlling the financial budget.
Welcome to Hub Pages. Your first Hub is well written and interesting. It is nonsensical that pot is illegal. I hope that law changes.
Thank-you for your comment James A Watkins.
The benefits of Marijuana and Hemp overall far outweigh the benefits of Tobacco (are there any benefits?) and Alcohol.
Abusers will abuse whatever they can get their hands on, so of course, it will have to be regulated, but I fear just like you cannot grow Tobacco for your own use (at least openly) if it is legalized, Marijuana may not (at least legally) be part of your Victory Garden anytime soon.
Which overall, wouldn't be a good thing if you love to Garden & wouldn't mind a MJ smoke every now & then as you're pulling weeds from your vegetable gardens...sigh.
I believe that the issue with hemp was resolved by our government and a man named DuPont. Henry Ford had an engine that was originally built to run off of hemp oil, he had a well established hemp farm, and everything to go ahead, but DuPont convinced the Government to use a petroleum based fuel. That is when Growing Hemp was made illegal, and the war on Hemp began to get Nationwide attention. Too bad a finite source was chosen over an infinite one...don't ya think?

I completely agree with you and have had this debate many-a-time. It is mind boggling and there are not many conclusions you can draw from it. One could be that it would be far too hard for the authorities to control, as you mentioned, but prohibition solves nothing: it just increases prices and could make it seem more appealling to some people as cannabis is not a 'hard drug' and there are very few negative aspects to it when used responsibly and not abused. Alcohol and tobacco are far more addictive and destructive but governments know they can earn a lot of taxes from them because there is massive demand. Perhaps they don't really think the numbers add up when it comes to marijuana, who knows. It could even be, as I've heard before, that it comes down to a form of racism. Generally, (in America especially, I think) marijuana is enjoyed more by the African-American communities, whereas alcohol is a close friend of the white man. Also, 'crimes' involving cannabis would help the authorities to project a higher crime rate, which together with the rest of the scare-mongering we are bombarded with when we turn on the news, creates an ever fearful electorate who are more likely to 'stick with the Devil they know' and re-elect the same idiots. How else did George W Bush get a second term??
Food for thought.
