Citizen Servatius
67Unvarnished Talk & Opinion
Conservative talk radio has been phenomenal for over two decades now. While the actual medium of talk radio goes back over four decades, it is only in the last twenty years that it has hit its stride. Its genesis is that it seemed to spawn from the ailing financial state of AM radio versus FM radio in the 1970's and 1980's. AM radio simply could not compete with FM radio in the music arena because of the lack of clarity of the AM signal. What to do to stem the steady erosion of listeners and, consequently, advertising revenue? A man named Rush Limbaugh discovered the answer in 1988. His solution was to start a radio show where he didn't interview guests but, instead, told the public what HE thought about the problems of the day. Until that time, talk shows had been aired primarily from dark until dawn. They were hosted by people such as Larry King who interviewed authors, publishers, journalists, etc. Limbaugh, however, expounded conservative ideas over the airwaves. Conservatism had almost no outlets for conversation until Limbaugh came along. Government, television networks, press, universities, etc., had long been dominated by liberals and leftists. There were the occasional exceptions to the rule such as William F. Buckley and Paul Harvey. This was an America that still had fresh memories of Lyndon Johnson, Vietnam, the war on poverty, Watergate and Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan's election as President in 1980 began a period where the political pendulum started a rightward swing. With Limbaugh's astounding success, he was joined on the airwaves later by people such as Sean Hannity, Bill Cunningham, Dr. Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt, et al. Liberal talk radio was never able to grab a toehold in the commercial talk radio market. It only survived on the taxpayer subsidized National Public Radio. There appears to be a new star on the talk radio horizon and her name is Tara Servatius. "Citizen Servatius", as is her nickname, resides near Charlotte, North Carolina and has a daily radio show on WBT 1110 AM from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. ( Eastern ). Servatius possesses a razor sharp mind and isn't afraid to take on all comers. Her format includes both local, national and some international discussion. She routinely apologizes to the people of South Carolina for the failings of the North Carolina corrections system. Prison escapees and parolees from North Carolina occasionally venture into South Carolina and murder innocent people. North Carolina's governor simply apologizes to her sister state. Servatius isn't afraid to talk about the taboo issue of race in America. She verbally lays the lumber on politicians of all ranks and parties from Barak Obama on down. If anyone outside the signal range of WBT 1110 AM wants to hear a rising talk radio superstar, then you may listen to Servatius from Monday thru Friday on www.wbt.com from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. ( Eastern ).
