Citizens and the President

I read a quote today.

"The only title in our democracy superior to that of President is the title of Citizen" - Louis D Brandeis, former US Supreme Court Justice.

I found the quote a bit strange. Then I thought that perhaps he could say this as he lived in US. I can't even hink of it as I live in India. In India, when President comes out on the street, citizens are treated like dirt.

It was President's birthday, but for citizens it was a nightmare. Poor citizens caught on the President's route had it. If they were told in advance, they could have taken another route but no body is willing to give even this much consideration to Indian citizens. Few days back it was Prime Minister who went to deliver a lecture to selected audience. On his route he delivered all possible inconveniences to citizens caught between him and his security.

I wrote my own quote - "The only title in Indian democracy inferior to every other title is the title of Citizen". In India, every body is important except citizen. Some are Very Important (VIP). Some are even Very Very Important (VVIP). They are so important that their relatives and friends also become important.

Like US democracy in Indian democracy also, there are two main titles, Citizens and VIP. President, Prime Minister, Ministers, MPs, MLAs, in short everybody who holds some position of influence is a VIP (or VVIP). Even Public Servants are VIP. But public (citizens) are no body. As per a newspaper, VIP is a prson who can hold up other persons in the name of security but gets upset if he or he is security-frisked at airports.

These VIPs were citizens once (ofcourse some were born as VIPs only). They used to roam on streets and no body was bothered about them. But the moment they became VIP, they started facing threat to their life. Citizens are considered biggest security threat to these VIPs. But the reality is that these VIPs pose a security threat to citizens whenever they come out.

These VIPs are a nuisance, liability on the nation, a security threat to citizens. May God save Indian citizens from Indian VIPs.
