The Begats

In the Bible, the book of Genesis only offers a small exerpt on the ministry of Enoch, the son of Jared and father of Methuselah. The most noteworthy passage tells that he was translated without experiancing death; Gen 5:24 "And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him."

One would think that a man of such righteousness who walked with God and saw him face to face would have a little more detail about his life. In my mind the story is too short, it leaves the reader only to believe that the book of Genesis was completely abridged and much detail was left out. Rather I find solice in the testimony of Moses who gave an extended account of Enoch in the Pearl of Great Price. A further clarification is added by inspiration Where it states; "And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God recieved it up into his own bosom."

Another instance of over abridging would be the significant birth of Peleg who's name ment "Division" because the earth was divided when he was born, But what about this division? Were the people divided? of could it have been the continents? This small passage is also clarified in the Docterine and Covenants when the lord states,D&C 133: 24 "And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided."

The other Enoch

In Genesis 4:17 it refers to a different City which was built by an Enoch who was a son of Cain, To avoid confusion, the city built by Enoch (the descendant of Cain,) was called the City of Enoch, where the one built by Enoch (the descendant of Seth,) was called Zion. A pure city and habitation of the Lord. It states In Moses 7:18 "And the Lord called his people Zion because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them."

Enoch testified continually of the comming of Jesus Christ in the meridian of times for the redemption of the world. He saw in vision the slaying of the lamb of God and his resurection, and also Christ's return when he wil reign on earth for a thousand years. He sorrowfully watched the growing wickedness of the people in his days as they began to fill the earth, and the Lord showed him the trials of Noah, and the flood, and further to the ends of the Earth along with all of the things to come until the end.

He moved mountains by the command of his voice, and was so feared by the strength of his voice among the people that he overcame all of his enemies. Enoch saw God face to face and numerous concourses of angels in the heavens. He became a great prophet to the people and baptized them by the commands of God in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

His ministry is given in explicit detail in the book of Moses, where the existance of a man who's inspired testimony and miraculous existance is emphatically understated in the Book of Genesis.

I think Enoch is one of my favorite prophets. As Joseph Smith was working on restoring some of the plain and precious truths back to The Bible by the process of revelation, he came across many things he did not understand. He simply asked of the Lord and was given the answer... today we have those answers in the form of the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. It might be interesting to note that he was commanded to start the correction process with the Old Testament and as soon as he understood who Enoch and Zion really were, he was commanded by the Lord to stop the Old Testament work and begin work on the New Testament. I believe that was because he needed to understand what the goal was for us to accomplish, that goal being Zion. After he understood the nature of the goal he then worked on how to achieve that goal and that is taught best by Christ himself, as witnessed in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon.

Enoch showed us what we are to strive for... Christ teaches us how to get it.

Enoch - one of the greatest prophets and certainly a favorite of mine. As to why there is so little written of him it does cause a person to wonder. Could be several reasons, one may be some of that info is for advanced spiritual people only as could be detrimental in immature careless hands. After all, Enoch was well versed in spiritual authority and how sound and words work in the universe.

The most likely reason so little is told of him is that generations of editors made a real mess of things. Any way you look at it, it certainly gives us plenty to think about and question, sending those queries out into the universe, awaiting God's reply! Great hub, thanks!

There wasn't that little written of Enoch. An entire apocryphal book is devoted to him that has found its way into some, but not many, Bibles.

Correct, although I havn't taken the apocrypha for scripture, I have heard that they found a book of his account in the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is a contraversial subject. Makes me wonder what happened with Melchizedek too.

Book of Enoch, is a false gospel, if it can even be called a gospel, written about 200BC and never was in the true bible, and caused many people to be confused. There are three Enoch's and only the seventh from Adam was taken, there were no books written by him either and he never preached about Jesus. so this little insert is twisted, and not in line with the bible.

Of course it is in line with the Bible but this article is not about the book of Enoch, it is about the city of Enoch which is found in the Book of Moses. this is inspired LDS doctrine translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Very congruent with Biblical teachings.
