Introduction to Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a broad category or class of professional worker who design, builds, or manages infrastructure works.

Much of the work that Civil Engineers perform is public infrstructure such as roads, stormwater, water and sewer networks, bridges, tunnels, harbours, canals, and structures.

Civil Engineers spend time early on in design projects to optimise the materials used, the cost of the project, the safety of the works, and the timeframe required to complete the job. Risk management is an important aspect of all Civil Engineering roles where the ability to identify risk in terms of risk to the company, risk to the environment, risk to property owners, or risk to peoples lives is critical.

Civil Engineers use computer software to design and manage projects, working with graphics intensive packages such as AutoCad and 12D for land development, Strand 7 for structural design and HEC Ras, Mike 21 and Drains for stormwater and flooding design.

Civil Engineers often become leaders in companies from their ability to solve problems and create a structured workflow process.

As this page grows, I'll write more and include links to articles and photos around the web on Civil Engineering.
