History of the Claddagh Ring
Through its rich and colorful ancient past, one can see how a Claddagh ring has transcended from being a simple piece of accessory to one that abounds significance and expression of Irish tradition.
Claddagh rings originated from a small fishing village in Ireland called Claddagh, which was a beautiful ancient village with windings streets and mud houses that had thatched roofs. This word came from the word “Cladach” which refers to a “flat stony shore.”
Two stories about the origin of Claddagh rings have been passed on from past generations to the present. One of these is the story about Margaret Joyce, also known as Margaret of the Bridges. Margaret Joyce married Domingo de Rona, a wealthy Spanish merchant with Galway, Ireland.
Margaret inherited a huge amount of money from her husband when he died. After that, she married Oliver Ogffrench, who was the mayor of Galway in 1596. Margaret used her inheritance to construct most of the bridges in Connacht. One day, an eagle dropped a gold ring into her lap. This was said to be the very first Claddagh ring.
Another story about the origin of the Claddagh ring involves a Galway native named Richard Joyce, who was captured by Algerian Corsairs while he was on his way to the West Indies just before he was going to get married.
The captors sold him to a Moorish Goldsmith, who taught him the trade. Richard eventually became a skilled ring craftsman and he designed a ring of special significance for the love of his life. Even after many years, Richard never got over his wife to be.
In 1689, William III of England demanded the release of all British subjects from slavery. The Goldsmith complied but he offered Richard half his wealth and the hand of his daughter just so he would stay with them. Richard declined to accept his riches and went back to Galway to find his Irish love.
When he returned to Ireland, he found his love, married her and used the Claddagh ring he designed as their wedding ring. Today, the Claddagh ring remains to be a popular wedding ring and a great symbol of undying love and devotion.
Even though the Claddagh ring speaks of two stories about its origin, it does not matter; people believe that this ring is filled with a rich history and deep significance that are important up to this day.

The Claddagh Ring Today
Nowadays, it is easy to find Claddagh rings in the market because of its wide popularity. However, not everyone is familiar with the customs that revolve around the usage of this ring. The way a person wears a claddagh ring in his or her finger denotes of the person’s romantic status.
If the ring is on the right hand and its crown faces the base of the finger, this means that the wearer is single, available, or not currently in any romantic relationship. If the ring is worn of the right hand with the crown facing away from the finger’s base, this signifies that the person is in a committed and serious relationship. If the ring is worn on the left hand, the person wearing it is married.
With its interesting origins and deep meaning, Claddagh rings are not simply fashion accessories, they are expressions of love and devotion, as well as respect and loyalty to one’s Irish culture and heritage.
