DAKTARI

In 1966 and through 1969 there was a TV series that I loved to watch. Too bad it only lasted a few years. I am sure that I wasn't the only one who loved watching the antics of Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion and Judy the chimpanzee that ran around on the show. It got it's beginning as a spin-off from the movie Clarence, The Cross-eyed Lion, produced by MGM. There is a clip here for your viewing. Judy, the chimpanzee, was a cut-up and a mischievous little gal. Although they were in many of the shows with many other animals, there was another subject the flowed throughout the show. That was Poaching and preserving the wildlife of the African Safari. Poaching was just as a big problem then as it is now.

Dr. Marshall Tracy, a Veterinarian and animal behavior specialist went to the African Safari to set up a wildlife preservation. Along with him he brought his daughter, Paula to help him.

In Swahili, Daktari meant "Doctor" and so became the name of the TV series. Among the main characters were Jack, an America, Hedley the Game Warden, a local resident of Africa, Mike and later were added Bart who once was a poacher and Jenny who was an orphan they took in. **A nice bit of trivia. I bet you didn't know that Erin Moran starred in this way before she was ever in Happy Days!

The show dealt with animals and dealing with ruthless poaching of African Animals in the Safari. Back then they had their hands full with getting them and bringing them to justice. They don't seem to be making and headway with this as you can read the news feed here about the poaching that is still being done there and around the world.

I remember the show. It was during a period where they tried to put Americans in a African setting. I also remember the movies Cowboy in Africa and Elephant Walk.

Pete, thanks for stopping by. I wish that I could have added more, but my memory isn't as keen being that I was only in 3rd grade when this came out. There isn't that much on it on the net either and the links that some of them had, didn't work. This is my best rendition of the show. I think it was the major inspiration on getting me to be an animal lover and advocate.

I remember this show too! Maybe someone will pull the tapes out of the vault and show it on TV land now.

Queen of the Lint. Yes I hope so too. There are lots of shows they could be showing instead of the back to back episodes of some. They get a little tiring to see only those shows.

Ralwus,  Yes, I did trly love them too.  TVLand needs some fresh shows on their channel.  While I like Gunsmoke and Bananza, there are way too many others they could be showing.
