The pet food recalls of 2007 have come and gone cats and dogs continue to become ill and die due to the pet food ingredients.
Pet food producers are using ingredients unfit for human consumption which are killing our pets. The ingredients in pet food must be changed!
The use of Corn, Wheat, and Soy are causing such awful conditions in pets including:
- Dry and itchy skin
- Fever
- Ear aches
- Ear infections
- Hot Spots on the skin
- Bad breath
- Dental disease
- Hair loss
- Sore feet
- Abnormal nail growth
- Bloat
- Weight gain
- Tumors
- Moles and warts
- Seizures
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Heart conditions
- Kidney conditions
- Liver conditions
- Early pet death
These companies need to be held accountable for the injuries to our pets and our best friends early deaths! - Susan Peters
Judge Altonaga Muzzles Pet Food Companies
Today, April 4, 2008, I attended a court session held on the Class Action filed by Cathy MacIvor of Maltzman Foreman PA on behalf of pet owners who have suffered loss or injury due to false advertising by pet food companies. The hearing was held in Miami, Florida's Federal Court and ruled by Judge Altonaga. The hearing was conducted because the pet food companies wanted to have the case dismissed.
The Maltzman Law firm was represented by Cathy MacIvor, attorney, two paralegal professionals, and an intern. The Plaintiffs for the case (people who have had injury or damages to their pets) were represented by Renee Blaskowski and Susan Peters.
The Defendants (the folks who have been producing and selling damaging pet food), 23 pet food companies were represented by a number of impressive, high power attorneys. There seemed to be two main speakers for the pet food companies. One was a woman attorney for Nutro Pet food and the other was a woman attorney for Nestle.
Before I begin telling about my experience in court today I want to make it perfectly clear to you that I did not take a transcript and that the comments I make here are in my words and are my impressions of today's events. With that said, let me tell you the exciting news!
Nestle wants to protect the household name it has built for itself and asked that the Nestle name not be held accountable for the pet food portion of the company. This means that Purina is the name to be held responsible for the false advertising and poor quality pet food it produces.
Nutro Pet foods did not even understand what the suit was about and continually had to be reminded by the judge why they were there. Nutro does not want to be held accountable for the pet food it produces. Nutro was worried that future products, with bad ingredients, made by Nutro would cost them a lot of money in damages if made to be responsible for what they produce. This sounded to me like Nutro plans to continue to make bad pet food. Nutro wanted the judge to remove responsibility from Nutro if the person's pet was killed or injured fed any other pet food or watched any other pet food company commercials or read any other pet food company's ads. Judge Altonaga had to remind Nutro a number of times that Nutro should be held accountable for the pet food they produce.
Today's hearing was about the pet food companies wanting to have our claim against them dismissed. Judge Altonaga ruled against the pet food companies!!! Judge Altonaga wants to see this case get rolling at a faster speed. The judge reminded us that this case has been in Federal court for a year now and need to get moving. We should be hearing a lot more about this case in the next few weeks.
I will keep you posted as the news rolls in. For those of you who have been posting comments and questions to me over the last week or two, I would like to apologize for not having a quick response. I should be back to my computer in about a week. I have a long drive back to Oklahoma and a lot of catching up on pet food reviews, etc.

Keep up the good work, I make sure I read your articles every day. Just lost my dog to dibetes and liver and kidney failure, don't know if it was the food or her weight but it was to soon for her to die. She was fed Pedigree dry dog food all her life. I'm watching labels and keep reading articles about pet food. Thanks again from all of my pets. God Bless you.
Kathy,
I just got back this morning from facing these pet food folks. I have a lot more information to share and can't wait to get my thoughts pulled together and by bags unpacked ...
Corn, wheat, and soy cause a number of conditions in pets before leading to death. These conditions include weight gain and everything you described to me about your pet.
Pedigree is one of the companies named in this suit. I am so sorry for your loss. These pet food companies have to be stopped from killing our pets!
Susan
Hi, we lost our lab over this pet food deal i am sure. It still hurts even to talk about it. Butch was to me the BEST dog i have had... I do hope you nail these people for what they did. If i can help please let me know.
John
John,
Not only did they kill our pets but the pets continue to die every day. Nothing has changed except the pet food companies got away with adding toxic grains (corn, wheat, and soy will kill cats and dogs) to the mix. I'm pushing as hard as I can to get these people to change their ways.
I'm sorry, John, about Butch.
Susan
You are doing an excellent job of bringing the issues related to this topic to a large audience. Thank you for the clear writing and the helpful definitions. This time may be the first I have seen "plaintiff" and "defendant" defined within the text. That may sound like a small thing to some people, but I assure you, it's appreciated by many.
Your fan, S.
Sally's,
I'm glad I can be of help and you have given me a smile to wear all day!
Susan
Wow, how stupid could Nutro be? I'll be sure to never ever buy it for any dog I ever have!
Susan - do you know anything about the food under the Whole Foods brand? My dogs eat that.. is it safe?
Elise
Elise,
Amazing, isn't it that Nutro could be so clueless?
I think you are asking about WholeMeals? The answer is, "yes". http://hubpages.com/hub/Dog-Food-Review-Dog-Food-C

Thank you for all you do. You have saved my dog as I am now preparing homecooked meals and will from now on. I thought I was doing good for the past 6 years by using California Natural Lamb and Rice Reduced...wow, what a mistake!
Sue,
Thank you so much for a day brightner!
Susan
What about Menu Foods? They were supposed to settle claims but you can't find any place to file a claim and a letter was received saying they could not contact anyone. How are people to get claims settled if no one gives anyone the forms or the addresses?
B,
Terms of the Menu Foods settlement are supposed to be released May 1st.

Fed my dogs Nutro Natural Choice dry food, have dog with allergies. It almost killed my 1 yr old great dane. 6/2 in the a.m. was taken to the hospital, diagnosed with Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. The recall list doesn't list dry food. Joined the C.A. lawsuit, since they don't mention dry food, do I have a chance? I have $2000 dollar vet bill. AND not sure what to feed her once she comes home, real worried. The safe list shows some food that people have complaints about. Confused.
Kelley,
Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis means bleading intestine. There is no cause sited by giving the symptoms a name. You and I both know the cause for the problem. Corn, wheat, and soy plus a number of other ingredients the sneaky pet food companies are putting into the pet foods they produce. Safe list simply means there have been no recalls. Safe for the pet to eat is a whole different issue. The only real test is the Pet Food Danger Gauge.
The pet food industry as a whole does not have the health and well being of our pets in mind when producing "healthy" pet foods.
My prayers are with you,
Susan
Susan, thank you for your quick response. I brought Annie home and she looks so much better. I am feeding her Hill's prescription diet, the vet sent home with me. I was thining of once she is off of that and after her liver test next week, I was going to buy Science Diet Large Breed lamb and rice. What are your thoughts on that food? At least it does not have animal digest in it, that I can tell anyway. I want to thank you again, you are a good person to be able to answer all these questions.
Kelley,
Read the label. Throw that KILLER food in the trash right now. I am not suggesting buying Ol' Roy but it is 3 times better and tons cheaper than Hill's anything! Hills is killing your dog!
Susan
I have been feeding my dog IAMS mini chunks dry dog food for a while and it seems to be okay. I have 2 Westies and one has heavy layers of dead skin and real oily. Can't figure out what is wrong. Can't afford to spend 100's of dollars for a Dermatologist for testing. I have gone through the good food list and have gotten so confused as to what is good to feed them. I almost chose purina selects dog foods, but them I found that it has animal digest in it. I am so lost.
Joyce,
The oily, dead skin is due to corn in the Iams. You need to be feeding a product free of corn, wheat, and soy. Remove these three grains an nearly all your skin issues will go away. In my area the only two products available (besides on line) are Lassie (at the grocery store) and Wal Mart's Maxximum Nutrition. Stay away from Purina ... they think we feed cows and horse - nothing but grains.
Susan
Thank you so much, you have been a great help to all of us. God Bless You!!
Joyce,
Thank you for the kind words! Just when I wonder if my heart will take another sad story of how a dog or cat has become sick or died at the hands of a pet food company --- I get a nice thank you from you!
Susan
MY CAT DIED ON SAT 7/12/08 FROM MOUTH CANCER & KIDNEY FAILURE HE ALSO HAD MASSIVE GALLSTONES WHICH DR STATED WERE EXTREMELY RARE!!! HE HAD BEEN ON HILL'S W/D PRESCRIPTION DIET FOR 6YRS & IT WAS THE CAUSE OF ALL THESE PROBLEMS!!! THE DR CONFIRMED THAT THE FOOD KILLED HIM!!! HE WAS MY SWEET LITTLE BOY, MY BEST FRIEND & I LOVED HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING!!!
Tina,
I am so sorry.
Susan
I brought pedigree can dog food and my dog got sick. I took him to the vet and it cost me $240.00 dollars. I want pedigree to reinburse me for this lost because I can't afford to keep paying when I trusted them to provide healthy food for my dog to eat. He began walking real slow and throwing up whole chucks of pedigree every where in the house. He had trouble holding his urine and he could not eat at all today. He also had soft stool. I cooked his food (chicken & rice)(fish & rice) but I can't cook like that every day. I need a dog food I can trust. Also the vet said my dog's stomach area is sticking out. I am so upset. If anything happens to my dog! He's my best friend.
I have to 2 little dogs, both had kidney failure and pancrea problems. They almost died from eating Cesar dog food. They will not claim any reponseabilty for it. I know it was the food and so does the vet. Cost me $3000 to get them over it. The vet thought they had been poisoned but they are always on a leash outside and always with us. Could not have been poisoned. Has anyone else had this problem with Cesars.
Keep up the good work, I to lost my dog to that tinted food my dog died of kidney failure. These large corps like making the money but won't take resonsibility for their errors.
