Clearwire WIMAX Wireless Internet - A Customer's Review (Thumbs UP!)--Updated 09/08/2009
88It is what it is, no hype, no bull, low-cost - High Speed Internet
Update follows main article
I had to laugh today when I read about Comcast getting ready tomorrow to begin selling their wireless Internet service. What I was really laughing about was the price they're going to charge. A one-year promotional price of $49.99. The service will cost $72.95 when the promotion expires.
Comcast decided to begin in Oregon. It's a arrangement between Sprint, Comcast, and Clearwire. Clearwire also operates independently here in Oregon and has since January 2009. Clearwire has three price ranges for their Internet service, Fast for around $28 a month, Faster for about $38 a month, and Fastest for about $48 per month. These are not promotional prices, these are the regular prices. These prices are for home-wireless services.
If your thinking about wireless-on-the-go Internet the price begins at around $30 a month. The wireless USB modem sells for $50 OR if you currently have a contract - contracts are NOT needed to have month-to-month service with Clearwire - Clearwire will rent you either of the modems - about $3 a month for home, and $5 month for USB Wireless.
About renting the Wireless USB Modem - Clearwire has told me they no longer rent the Wireless USB Modem - BUT, when I pressed the point of already having a contract they agreed I could rent the modem. You can see it's a better deal to buy the Wireless USB Modem, but, I did not have the additional $50, so, renting it for $5 allowed me to immediately start using WIMAX.
And, what Clearwire states in their advertising is exactly what Clearwire gives its customers. I signed up in January 2009, and have been dazzled ever since. I'm on the mid-range speed and I pay $38 month. I can watch movies, have lots of pages open, do uploads and downloads flawlessly. And, best of all, Clearwire has the best customer and tech support I have ever experienced. All their customer service and tech support are based in the United States.
There was one month, awhile back, I had trouble paying on my due-date. They took two-payments and never interrupted my service. They are always a joy to deal with, regardless of tech or customer service. I bet you can't say that about your Internet service?
When I go and repair a computer at someone else's home I always take my Clearwire modem with me. Why? Because I know it works flawlessly and I want my customers to see this superb Internet service. And, thirdly, because if I am stumped as to a problem I can call Clearwire's tech support and they will help me troubleshoot any computer my service is plugged into. That's really cool. Clearwire operates a 4G Network.
And, there is no software. You simply turn off your computer, plug the modem in, turn the computer back on, and BOOM, your rolling on the Internet, flawlessly. Finally, Internet without the hype, bull, and broken promises. All Clearwire service is encrypted.
In your home, in your car blasting down the freeway, or sitting in a park, absolutely flawless Internet service. It's a breath of fresh air.
UPDATE 09/08/2009 - My Continuing Service with Clear:
The last part of August I decided to add to my Home Service "Internet for my laptop." After setting up the USB Modem for my laptop Clearwire failed to mention the service will only work with Windows XP, Vista, or the new upcoming Windows 7. My laptop is an older model and it runs Windows 2000. So, I had to return the product.
AND the return must be set-up within seven (7) days of the actual original order or you get wacked with penalties.
Lastly, while setting up the returning of the USB Modem I noticed an unauthorized $3.99 per month charge for insurance on my Home Service modem, which I had never authorized. When I confronted a Clearwire customer service person and pressed the point about it being an illegal charge Clear gave me a 3-month refund, but, I still got screwed out of three months. Moral of this last paragraph - double check what you're paying for.
All in all, though, Clearwire still provides excellent wireless service and, best of all, at an affordable price. Not all of their Customer Care agents are of the best quality. If you don't like the one you're talking to, hang up, and call again. We can't pick our relatives, but, we can pick our customer service agents.
Clearwire Internet service rating = A
Clearwire Customer Service rating = B-
Clearwire Tech Support rating = A+ (Tech Support OPEN 9am - 10pm 7 Days)
Clearwire is not for gamers - that's just my opinion.

My only reason to have written this article was to present to others this viable option for Internet service called WIMAX. I couldn't be happier with it. And, now that the cable companies and telephone companies are starting to offer this service at higher prices I thought it important to present the company who created it, CLEARWIRE*!
*Clearwire is now called CLEAR.
