How to Teach a Dog English

Clicker Training dogs can be a lot of fun and is a really great way to teach many dogs new tricks. A clicker is a small box that has a piece of metal in it that makes a click sound when it is pushed. It is inexpensive, only costing a dollar at your local pet store. One of the best things about it is that the dog will have a lot of fun figuring out this new game that you are showing him. Since dog don't speak english it can be difficult for them to learn the words that you are trying to teach them, that is why clicker training is so great. When you use a clicker you are telling the dog what you want it to do right when she is doing it. You mark the behavior you want by clicking.

Steps to Clicker Training a Dog

The first thing that should be done when teaching clicker training is to introduce the dog to the clicker. To do this you should have a bag of small tasty treats nearby and have the clicker in hand. You should click the clicker and then give the dog the treat. Continue to do this. The dog is learning that when the clicker clicks, it will get a treat. The click means something good is going to happen.

The next thing you want to do with clicker training is to pick something you want to teach the dog. Learning to sit would be a good thing to start with. Sit in a small room, like the bathroom, with the dog so that there are no distractions. You should probably bring a book with you, clicker training can be just as much a about having patience for yourself as it is about teaching your dog something. The dog will probably look at you intently, wanting that clicker to click. Don't say anything to the dog, remember dog can't speak english, essentially you are teaching your dog a new language with the clicker being your tool. When the dog happens to sit down click. You must click the second the dog's butt touches the floor. This is what is good about the clicker, it you were simply to treat, the dog might think it was because it got up that it got the treat. With the clicker it begins to understand that it was the second that his butt touched the floor that it got the click. Keep doing this, be careful to keep your body language neutral and not use hand signs. Dog's are masters at body language, it is easier for them to read that than to listen to what you are saying. You want them to understand your words. Later on you may decide that it could be beneficial for them to understand some sign to go with some of your words, but you should teach the word first. It may take a while for your dog to understand that it was because she sat that she got the treat. The second your dog begins to understand why she got the treat you will see her excitement. She will keep sitting over and over again to get you to click. The only talking you should do is to encourage your dog when he is doing the right thing, encouragement can go a long way and make a dog want to keep trying.

At this point it is good to take a break and end the session on a positive note. If your dog didn't make the breakthrough within 15 to 20 minutes you should still take the break. Trying to solve a problem like this can be very tiring for a dog. That is another benefit of clicker training, it gives your dog some mental exercise, which will help make him feel tired at the end of the day. After your dog makes the breakthrough, and is sitting consistently when you click the clicker is when you should begin the next step. This is when you should start saying sit, when you click. Don't stop clicking, simply say sit while you click. Do this many times, then stop using the clicker. Now your dog is beginning to know sit. You should continue playing the sit game with your dog for 5 day to a week before you move onto a new trick. If you move on to another trick too quickly it can be easy for your dog to get confused and forget a word.

What you Can Train your Dog to do

You can use clicker training to teach many new things. You use it to teach a dog their name, sit, come, stay, rollover, shake, beg, up, down, catch, fetch, Dog Kennel training, house training a dog, opening cabinets and many more. You can even litter train a dog, which is another hub that I have written. I'm sure there are things out there I have not even thought of, that is why it is goof to do research and read up with dog training books. I think you can probably teach a dog more things by clicker training than any other method, because the dog is wanting to make the clicker click. You don't always have to use treats to reward your dog. My dog is pretty obsessed with playing fetch. Sometimes when I am clicker training him his reward is me throwing the ball. This is really good because my dog is also getting some exercise. Clicker training is fun for the owner and the pet, it is fun teaching your dog english and it makes it a lot easier to get your dog to understand you.

It would appear that you are having fun teaching your dog with the clicker. As you said, clicker or no clicker, patience is the key. BTW, they do pick up language skills. It is amazing the words they eventually learn. We have to very slowly spell words so that ours do not get too excited about things before we are ready. Words like "walk", "car", "treats", and others get them really excited. I have read some articles that they eventually understand as many words as a 2nd or 3rd grader!
