Clocks And Time
51Clocks and time.... an integral part of life.
More integral than most of us may be aware of.
In ancient times there was no need or knowledge of clocks. Then man decided he needed to measure the time in his day to more efficiently organize his social obligations.
Thus the mark of civilized man ... organizing time to fit with his deeds and needs... and important part of life.
The first clocks were far from accurate... losing a minimum of 15 minutes a day. That was close enough for time wasn't that defined during those days. An hour off here or there was nothing.. effected nothing.
Gradually through time man found time needed to be kept more accurately .. so from the shadow clocks of the ancient Egyptians to the atomic clock of today.. man went from keeping time by recognizing morning and afternoon to knowing exactly how many millions of vibrations of an element there are in one second of today's time.
Is this good for man.. for us.. to be timed to such an infinitissimal degree? Did we cross the line in defining time?
Our lives have come to revolve completely around this finely defined timing.
Is it healthy?
It is now 2:12:02 .. not "oh about 2 ten".
The airplane will land at 5:31.
The meeting will begin at 4:02.
If we lose a second.. will our life fall apart?
Every aspect of life depends on that fine tuned timing today.. from financial transactions, to business dealings of all types, transportation, communication... everything.
There is no time left to sit and watch the time go by.
That seems to be a luxury of the past.
The prescribed Zanax, Valium, Prozac, Zoloft seem to have taken the place of that swing on the porch.
Clocks and time ... have they come to the point where they are undoing us all?
Clocks and time .... turn the clock around and take time to watch those seconds float by.
