Closing Parts of the Southern California Coast to Fishing and Recreation

Bye bye fishing

Last weekend I was at the San Diego boat show when something was brought to my attention. Apparently the Marine Life Protection Agency of California wants to close down La Jolla to fishing and recreation so that we wont be able to fish the local waters off the Southern Coast in San Diego anymore and we will be forced to fish in Mexican territory or otherwise.

If La Jolla and other harbors that share the coast which include the Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, Point Loma and several others, is closed down we wont be able to launch our boats, fish recreationally, or tour the bays with local small tourist companies.

Further, if you don't already know, San Diego's prime income is from tourism and fishing. Closing these bays down would have an even greater impact on our community that is already paying for the stupidity of our government already.

There are two options in this matter. The MLPA is going to close down at least one part of the Southern California Coast to fishing and recreation to reestablish the habitat and protect it. This is not a problem and I am all for marine protection of the environment or otherwise.

The other option is to close down the coast off Del Mar which would be more appropriate since the La Jolla Coast is located next (in, whateva) to the deep La Jolla trench which sustains and replenishes itself naturally and no further actions is necessary for it's stability.

Del Mar however would benifit more for this protection and cause less of an impact on our local economy because it is an already hard to access bay, and the local community is not dependent on its coast to sustain the economy by tourism.

So I was given these petitions to fill out and send to your local state representative asking them to choose Del Mar instead of La Jolla because if they choose La Jolla then a lot of local fishing business will be put out of business especially in Point Loma which is where I live. It will also force us to spend more on gasoline and other things just to be able to fish not to mention wondering what so many people with do with their boats and the even more disturbing impact that it would have on people who actually fish for food.

The price that we pay for our fishing licence is with the intent that the MLPA uses the money to clean up the water and replenish the fish already so why they are doing this is beyond me, plus the cost of a fishing license already went up this year as well as new regulations.

If you live in Southern California then please sign these letter and send them to your local representatives. I have a feeling that if they close this area that they will end up charging more taxes and fees to people who already keep their boats docked in these bays because there is no where else to put them.

Again, the San Diego bays are too important to our local community, not just it's heritage but too many people depend on it to make a living. People live in San Diego because we love the water, we love the enjoyment and peace that it brings to us and without it all we have left is politics. lol. ever increasing the already increasing taxes, rent, mortgages, vehicle registrations, sales taxes, cigarette taxes, recreational taxes... yeah that is right, we are being taxed on everything.

So please help. We are for environmental protection but if the choice is Del Mar or La Jolla then Del Mar is obviously the best choice.

I love the San Diego Area. My first whale watching adventure took place there. San Diego is the home of the FISH Taco! I can't imagine what they are thinking. Is it over fished? What's the deal? San Diego without fishing, is like a fish taco without the fish.

Hope this goes well for you. Interesting Hub.

That's just lame. California is ridiculous like that. Last year there was a lot of talk about California wanting to close off the deserts to off roaders for "conservation purposes." IT'S A DESERT!!! WHAT'S THERE TO CONSERVE?!? I'll check out that petition. Thanks for the heads up.

You should try BC in Canada. I had some of the best fishing days of my life there. My son just caught a Sturgeon on the river and the forest walks are amazing.

I here you about fishing authorities though but here in Poland where I live now you have to take an exam to fish and the regulations just about make it impossible to fish.

I have 3 kids in Califonia but they don't fish YET :)Nice hub!

I know Benji! I was out at Glamis last weekend, half the desert is closed to ORVs, they closed it down to preserve some weed that was being destroyed by people but at least they left some of it open for recreation.

But this petition to close La Jolla is ridiculous. Thanks for checking out the petition. I hope you sign them and send them.

One of the things thqt I love to do at age 78 is go out off shore with my son and grands and do a little fishing. Most states do not charge seniors for a fishing licence so this state sucks when it helps everyone except the elderly. We have few things to enjoy and you want that too.

That does suck Mr. Kydd. I doubt that it will get any better considering Mr. Swartz and his new plan to fix the "budget" crisis which took money from...of course... Parks and Recreation.

I love fishing too. Us young kids are having these things taken away from us as well. So at 78, I can only imagine.
