Collecting Perfume Bottles: An Expensive Addiction
71Would you buy a perfume for the bottle and nothing else?
The juice inside is secondary. It’s the bottle that matters. Perfume houses invest a lot of money in packaging and marketing. Sometimes, I think the perfume is no longer about the liquid inside rather it’s the bottle that defines the perfume.
The art of perfumery brings forth a wide range of well-crafted flacons: artistic, distinct and personalized. Each bottle tells a story and it embraces the emotions of the fragrance inside.
To every artist, creating fragrance is just as exciting as designing the flacon that will hold the liquid. The shape: curves or lines; jewels: Swarovski or amethyst; stopper: flamboyant petals or a silver fairy.
Here are my top 10 fanciest fragrance bottles:
Van Cleef & Arpels Feerie – The fairy is the main attraction. It looks cute, dainty and sweet.
Donna Karan Cashmere Mist – The flacon is inspired by a woman’s curves. Oozing with sensuality and the juice inside matches the seamless beauty of the bottle.
Lolita Lempicka – Girly and the lilac-colored bottle is simply adorable.
Guerlain Mitsouko – The classic. The limited edition prestigious baccarat crystal fetches at $7,000 a piece. The flacon is adorned with jade and pearls.
Bond No 9 – The fragrance house that shuns the recession. The Swarovski all-stars collection boasts 5,000 Swarovski stones in each 50ml bottle.
Marc Jacobs Lola & Daisy – The larger than life bright colored flower stopper IS the show-stopper.
Ralph Lauren Love – Heart-shaped crystal topped with amethyst embedded stopper.
Lalique Amethyst Crystal – Amethyst seems to be the favorite jewel lately, this time it’s wrapped around black currant and berries.
Bvlgari Omnia – Two intertwined rings in fluid colors. Opulent and majestic.
Guerlain Shalimar – Shalimar’s glass bottle definitely commands attention. Guerlain’s earlier fragrances are known for its bold display of luxury as seen in the well-crafted decant.

Now, some of these, er most of these fragrances are way over $100, would you still buy the perfume just for the bottle alone?
