Colon Cleanse Products: Good Plan or a Scam?

Systematic Scare Tactics

Parasites. Toxins. Pounds of backed-up fecal matter stewing in your intestines. These are the common reasons the manufacturers of colon cleansers give you to buy their product. Is your fear justified? Or are you simply being manipulated?

Colon cleanse websites like Blessed Herbs, HPS Online, and Dr. Natura, which sells the popular "Colonix" product, contain photo galleries designed to panic the viewer. Accompanied by quotes like, "I can't believe this came out of me," these visual testimonials are some of the most effective advertising I've ever seen. But effective advertising doesn't necessarily indicate an effective product, as consumers too often forget.

Achieving Enlightenment

I agree, the prospects are frightening. But before you fork over hundreds of dollars and sacrifice countless hours with your behind glued to the toilet seat, think skeptically for a moment:

  • I start taking this product.
  • I start passing odd-looking stools.

The logician's immediate reaction would be, what you're putting in your body is, in fact, creating the foul bowel movements.

Browse those picture galleries one more time, then take a critical look at a diagram of your large intestine, such as the cross-section shown at right. The shape is remarkably similar. And since when did your stools have a consistancy that allowed them to be hooked over a newspaper or plastic spoon?

Before you write me off as a conspiracy theorist, try this experiment: Take a glass and fill it 1/4 full of water. Add several tablespoons of Metameucil powder, or several of their capsules. Stir and let sit for a day or two. The mixture will settle, then gradually begin to form into a gel, which takes the shape of the glass.

You know what's coming next. Check your favorite colon cleanse product's list of ingredients. More likely than not, one of the first on the list will be some form of psyllium husk, which is, you guessed it, the main component of Metameucil, and many other fiber supplements.

The Truth Will Set You Free

When the spokesperson on the Dual Action Cleanse infomercial tells you he's spent years developing the perfect formula, he's not lying. He has created the perfect formula, but not for cleaning your colon. Colon cleanse products are painstakingly designed to produce visible, horrifying results that will induce the consumer to buy again, and again, and again. Customer satisfaction skyrockets, but does customer health?

The fact is, our bodies are very well designed, whether by an omnipotent Creator or by millenia of evolution, and the colon does its job pretty efficiently on its own. There are cases, like cancer, polyps, and IBS, where additional treatment is necessary, but in general, if you're eating enough fiber and drinking enough water, the most you'll ever need to take in the way of colon cleansing is a simple fiber supplement. And as you can see above, psyllium husk on its own is pretty darn cheap!

So don't waste your money, your time, or your peace of mind. Read up on how to fit more fiber into your diet, pick out a supplement from the list above, and try to appreciate the magical workings of your body. It's the only one you've got.

I've always been suspicious of those myself. I also read that many include clay, which is not good for you. They market it as a "colonic in a bottle". But colonics aren't good for you either.

I think the sooner we get over our shit stinking (pardon the language), the sooner nonsense products like these will go away.

I agree - regular, cheap fiber is "nature's broom".

Good Hub Maddie! The side-by-side comparison is VERY effective. Can you do one on juicing? That is also supposed to cleanse.

Hi.

You make some very good points. I too have felt scammed by products such as Colonix & Dual Action Cleanse. Colonix is the oldest scam in the book. Just like you state above, the pictures are NOT impacted fecal matter, it's the psyllium that has formed a gel. I did the same experiment with the Colonix & Glass trick.

I don't beleive they are all scams. If used properly, they can be very beneficial. Of course, when does one cross the "excessive-use" line? Products like Dual Action Cleanse and Colonix give decent cleansing formulas a bad name. In fact, Dual Action Cleanse refused to give me my money back when I complained.

My aunt studied to be an RN(has since gotten a masters degree in this field) and I occasionally would browse through some of her material...One book that held particular interest for me was a book that described a liquid diet to cleanse the bowels. This book showed graphic pictures similiar to the ones you are referring to that you claim are used to "sell" a product...well this book I read was'nt selling anything and was for educational/informative purposes. This book also said that the feces would take on this shape because this waste material had been in the system so long it had taken on the shape of the intestines. Forgive me for not knowing the name of this book but this was 12 years ago...

I do agree that some narsty looking stuff can come out of you... that's not the point. The point is, these people are recording bowel movements of this sort for weeks and weeks at a time. There is no way all of that could fit inside you, along with the normal fecal matter accumulated from your everyday diet. In addition, I meant to point out that the active ingredients of these "cleanses" can be had at a much lower price, and are clearly not worth the markup as some sort of "miracle product." As you mentioned, fruit fasts and liquid diets (which should always be conducted under medical supervision) achieve similar results for a fraction of the price.

Thanks for thinking critically.

Thank goodness for sites like this. For the second night in a row I got nailed by a 4 am infomercial on TV, and this, with the "Dual Action Cleanse" I was just about to cave in and go for it. This one at least has web site. But getting to this site I couldn't find any testimonials neither lay or medical. This got me here.

I was interested in a colon cleanse because I "slowed down" six years ago (I am now 64) for some reason. I suspect my thyroid has something to do with it and am taking kelp and L-tyrosine supplements. I think this is helping to reestablish normal lubrication. Fiber supplemt basically does the rest. I vary the regiiment of a tablespoon a day in a random way, a few days running here and there. So basically I am OK. But I wanted to reduce dependency and get some of the touted health benifits along wiht "detoxification.".

I'll give a testimonial here. If you're taking the fiber for the first time, you can get som pretty astounding (ah, and gratifying!) results. And Ifromt he lookl of the stool oftentimesI believe the filber cleanses the intestinal rather wall.

Again thanks for all the commentary here.

Hi Maddie, Thanks so much for your site. America seems to be very preoccupied with their bums and what is coming out of them. I'm a medical student and we are taught that technically constipation is when a person has less than 3 stools a week. Most people have a misconception about what constitutes normal bowel habits and will do anything (many times to the detriment of their health) to keep "regular".Thanks for keeping people educated b/c the best patient is an informed one.

Although I do agree that many of these cleansers may be scamming you, my own personal experience with YERBA PRIMA was different. Their colon cleansing formula consists of two elements. One of them is the blend of psyllium husk with other herbal conituents. The other is KALENITE, a blend of actual cleansing and toning herbs. Although this is simply my own experience, trust me when I say that what was coming out of me was not simply psyllium. If you are willing (and have the stomach) to read about the variety of characteristics of fecal matter and observe what's coming out of you, I think one course of Kalenite and Yerba Prima Colon Cleanse (which by the way ain't no where near as expensive as some of those cited here) would make a healthier and wiser believer of you.

It's crucial to have a diet high in fibre whether it be from the daily intake of the foods consumed or from an inexpensive fibre supplement. The fact remains that these "wonder cures" are rather expensive and are marketed in a way to exploit the ignorant. Have to say that I agree with Maddie on this one. Off topic but take a Liver Flush for example: Epsom Salts + Olive oil = $1 It'd be fairly hard to market a product with these two 'active' ingredients for more than $10. I'm sure there are other liver cleansers out there with a large range of not so usefull herbs and herbal extracts that do sell for over $50 and do just as good a job for that matter. Check here and decide for yourself - http://curezone.com/cleanse/liver/huldas_recipe.as - It's a pretty informational site on the whole butt I wouldn't get too hyped up over it because a lot of the regulars there are militant on nature being able to cure everything without the use of synthesis eg. Superdoses of Vitamin A (isotretinoin) cures ACNE.... blah blah blah... Like a broken record: Eat a balanced diet. Exercise regularly. Exercise more if you prefer the sculpted body look which seems to be so omnipotent in todays society. Drink water too. It's like everything in life, you get out what you put in. And in closing I can assure you that if you don't eat, you don't shit, and if you don't shit you die.

CHEAP AND INEXPENSIVE - http://www.colonblow.com/ - read the testimonials.

I completely agree with your sentiments on a balanced diet and the importance of hydration, however I have to warn readers that I would not recommend Colon Blow. Any good safety software will tell you as soon as you click the link that they send out spam galore! A good product advertises itself. Spam is for scammers.

I'd also like to note that not everybody can achieve what you call "the sculpted body look." Weight is about as heritable as height, genetically. No matter how much some people exercise, they will never look anywhere close to the likes of Heidi Klum or Tyson Bedford. And who's to say whether or not those people should be our ultimate standards of beauty or not?

Anyway, thanks for reading and thinking critically.

sadly, i have to agree! I thought i finally found the miracle plan in a product called COLONIX from Drnatutra.com.

the claim was if you suffered  from constipation, IBS, severe gas and bloating, weight gain, chronic fatigue, acid reflux, parasites, stomach pain, diverticulitis, skin and hair problems and many other common ailments. That the Colonix program would put an end to the suffering by becoming clean inside. I suffered from everything on that list and I amazed my the testimonials & photos on the website.

review after review claimed hair was growing, skin glowing, stomach flatter, weight loss, large ropes of Mucuid Plaques from my intestl walls & much much much more. they even have a 1-800 number you can call if need assistance.

I thought to myself, all of these testimonials cant be lying...no way! this stuff has got to work...so i was hooked and i bought a box of colonix..i was so excited! I took the stuff and everyday day i kept waiting for a change, days went by, weeks went by. I did exactly what i was supposed to and I up'd mywater intake, which i think caused a  diahria effect.

all i got was a soft to running stool and VERY painful cramps. Yes, I did eliminate more than usual but that was ony when i dranked the tea te night before, which i found out was nothing but a laxative. im so disappointed.

I thought

where's the large ropes MB that saw on their site. I didnt get one rope. This is gross but everytime i have  a BM I raced to the stool to see if i would get one of those large ropes of waste that was stuck onto my colon walls for years. I figured i would have at least 5 to 10 pounds worth, and that would be the cause of some of the weight loss and flatter tummy but it didnt happened.

The only redeeming quality was the fact that it had a parasite cleaner bottle with the program. And i do know that the body has parasites or at least some people do because i saw a scary vidoe of parasites inside a colon on youtube and freaked me out!

When i took the colonix  i never saw any in my stool but the testimonials on the site claimed they saw em in theirs. in a sick kinda way i wanted to see them in my stool too just to say the product worked and im cleansed but i saw nothing so guess its a good thing.

As far as the reviews & testimonies claming they saw worms in the stool, I think because people's awareness was raised, they were paying more attention and simply seeing undigested seeds, corn and the like, strands of fruit/vegetables and thought them to be worms..

Anyways, i complained to another colon cleanse buddy and she said the point was never to lose weight, see ropes , clear skin or get a flat tummy but to get cleanse internally for a month. I guess she's right but i'm not FULLY sure that i'm cleansed or not.

i'm very disappointed in this product and i feel like a fool for falling for it but i had to at least try.

Oh well, instead of buying a $100 colon cleanse program i'll just drink plenty of water and take fiber supplement which is only about 7 or 8 bucks, but it sure whadda mean nice if the other stufff really worked. oh well!

Sorry for any errors and or spellings, im in a big hurry so i dont have time to proof read or fix this letter post. please for me.

THX for your time, Megan

I disagree. Take a look at the results people experience after a regimen of frequent colonics. They're only using water therapy to cleanse the colon and the stuff that comes out looks exactly like what you get from using treatments like Colonix.

Fact is, Colonix works - I can personally attest to this after buying the product for my wife and daughter. Believe me, it worked. A 3-ft long segmented tapeworm and other various nasties pretty much convinced me. I'm trying it now, and nothing dramatic has happened. So....it obviously does work for those who need it. If nothing happened for you, then you're pretty clean to begin with. Pretty simple, really. Having a degree in chemical engineering, I can tell you that a lot of materials, especially of organic nature, gel up when left alone for awhile. It's really a stretch to claim that these companies intentionally developed a product that would give you artificial silly-putty parasites. Nice try, though.

Mike  says:

Oh, I forgot to mention that we told our family physician about the parasites. He acted like that was highly unlikely unless we lived in the Amazon rainforest or the Congo, or walked barefoot in dumpsters quite often. He then gave my wife a prescription for 4 pills that he said would eradicate any and all parasites. She took the pills, nothing happened. She went back on the Colonix again after several months, and passed a couple more, one that was about 8 inches long with a triangle-shaped head. Pretty gross. Well, if you want a conspiracy theory, here's one for you. The doctors don't want you to get rid of your parasites because they make too much money treating you for all the bad stuff the parasites do to you over time. Sure it sounds incredible to actually have that stuff inside you BUT IT'S TRUE, PEOPLE. Not for all of you, but I would bet at least 10 - 15%. If you suspect you have worms, give it a try - and just eating fiber won't kill parasites by the way, you have to take the toxin that kills them (Paranil, in the Colonix kit). Ok, enough rambling, but seriously, keep an open mind on this one....

Kat  says:

There is a difference between "not likely" and "not possible." I highly doubt your doctor intended on keeping your wife sick. Tapeworms can be fatal, and lawsuits are nasty.

Soula  says:

I also doubt the doctor intended to keep Mike's wife sick.. HOWEVER... I firmly believe that doctors these days are just doing their job to get paid.. they're not the omnicient, selfless beings some of us like to think they are... and that means having patients temporarily get well enough only to come back a few weeks/months later for either the same complaint or another (that most likely is a side effect of the perscription that was given to them to begin with)... this is how they make their LIVING... ie: where would doctors be, if there was no need for perscribing pills?

Speaking of colonix, I have tried the Dr. Natura cleanse after stumbling on it online, while doing a search on cleanses, which resulted from my reading one of Kevin Trudeau's books... After doing the cleanse for about 2-3 weeks I passed an interesting, long, rubbery-looking specimen that definitely sparked quite the interest and fascination... I couldn't continue to do the cleanse because after about the 3rd week, I had a gallbladder attack and had to have my gallbladder removed.. The surgeon said my gallbladder was FILLED with stones... (This might sound sick but I thought it was pretty cool: He let me keep two as souvenirs lol)

Now I'd like to believe the cleanse initiated a toxin removal from my system, which in turn initiated the gallbladder attack, which let me know there was something wrong with my gallbladder... Gallstones don't form overnight.. and they certainly don't form in a month... the two incidents could very well be pure coincidence...but a gut feeling tells me (or so I'd like to believe) the cleanse basically initiated my body's cry for help.. I was able to schedule surgery a month later (after being on an extremely strict gallbladder diet to prevent any future attacks) and all went well... I guess you can take a 50/50 on this.. I'd love to hear people's opinions...

My father, who is a well know gasteroenterologist for the last 40 years suggests that normal bowel function is 1 to 3 bowel movements a day. Otherwise, material is collecting in the bowels. X rays can dectect fecal matter stuck to the interior walls of the bowels. Toxins meant for elimination are reabsorbed by the body. Younger people often have compensating energy and health for years. As we age the cumulative effects of incomplete elimation are felt.

I have used colonix and one of the first benefits was elimation of headaches which always accompanied sluggish elimiation. The herb formula is necessary for nourishing the organs and glands and for killing the pests. To put together the formulas and package them is costly. Today we do not consume the wild plant foods that routinely killed pests and toned our organs as our species evolved. Taking these supplements is beneficial and in my opinion will extend one's vitality.

Cleanses can work very well if your system is in need of one. I know mine was and I lost inches off my waist as my middle shrank throughout the cleanse and I left behind green/black/yellow ropes that were very old and dry. You can tell the difference because if you pass a normal stool after ingesting psyllium, it looks like a normal stool, brown and smooth but softer and more gel like, nothing like the ropes.

I have also put psyllium in a glass and it gels of course, but that proves nothing. The gel is what pushes the toxic goo out of you. I have passed ropes only using epsom salt and water too, so its no scam. Give it a try and you will see :)

Any doctor that defines constipation as less than 3 BMs a week is a fool. Frequent hard stools with straining, and regular BMs but at a lower quantity than normal is also constipation, and can lead to diarhhea.

I HAVE TRIED COLONIX (DRNATURA) SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE I HAVE IBS, COLONIX HAS HELPED ME WITH MY IBS. I DON'T THINK I PASSED LARGE WORMS, BUT I DID NOT STUDY MY STOOL LIKE OTHER PEOPLE DO. I DO KNOW I USE TO HAVE PROBLEMS OF GETTING PIN WORMS BECAUSE I COULD FEEL THEM WIGGLING AROUND THE EDGE OF MY ANAL, BY USING THE COLONIX IT HAS GOTTEN RID OF THE PIN WORMS, HELPED MY IBS, GAVE ME ENERGY, GOTTEN RID OF MY BACK PAINS DUE TO THE FECES BUILD UP IN MY BOWELS AND I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER.

MAYBE FOR OTHERS IT MAY NOT WORK, BUT I KNOW FOR SURE IT HAS HELPED ME ALOT, SO I USED COLONIX AROUND EVERY THREE TO FOUR MONTHS. BY THE WAY, MY GASTEROENTEROLOGIST TOLD ME A NORMAL BOWEL FUNCTION IS 1 to 3 BOWEL MOVEMENTS PER DAY. SO, I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING CHRISTINE WROTE.

I had tried others before Colonix and nothing even compared to Dr. Natura's. I plan on doing the cleanse again soon. Maybe it doesn't work for everybody but I stand by it wholeheartedly.

Why are we so in love with poop? This hub not only was great, but addictive. I had to read every comment left, so thanks for a great hub.

All this talk about cleansing makes me think about what my dad said about writers (and me), we're just full of sh*t. I counteract that by trying to drink more water, and be regular, and have tried the 5 juice cleanse before. My brother swears by some mix of cayanne pepper and warm water, along with fasting. It did produce some nasty results, which made me wonder how water can turn to poo- so it must be working on some level, but I've yet to try it.

Whenever I feel like cleaning out the trunk (I'm sorry) I just go to this cheap Chinese food place and get the Hot and Sour Chicken. After about four hours, I'm in the john, perched on my throne (someone please do a hub on the orgins of those phrases, is it the magna carta?) and I feel like everything is coming out. Suddenly, I'm 5 pounds lighter, or at least that's how I feel.

mike jones  says:

I did a juice and fiber cleanse that produced rope shits like the ones pictured on dr Naturas site. If you want amazing results like the ones pictured, all you have to do is take an excess of fiber (psyllium husk powder works the best). I dont know if it is the fiber or some kind of intestine lining that comes out but it was definitely rope like, and didn't break apart. If you want to try it yourself you will need psyllium husk powder and a gallon or 2 of organic juice. For your breakfast lunch and dinner, mix 2 - 3 heaping spoons of the fiber into a glass of juice and stir until it starts to thicken. Drink it quickly or else it will be the consistency of thick apple sauce. I did this for 2 days and passed some crazy ropes with weird stuff inside. Even though I hadn't eaten for 2 days I didn't feel that hungry because of all the fiber. I felt great afterwards and would recommend this to anyone who is considering one of those expensive programs. It is much cheaper and produces the same if not better results.

Having read all the comments on this hub, I am surprised that no one mentioned the important fact that humans get all of their nutrition, that feeds our bodies and our brains, as it is absorbed through our intestinal walls. If there is not a healthy colony of growing flora on the walls of the intestines because of accumulated muck, parasites and other stuff, we can't get the full benefit from anything we ingest.

In addition, almost unknown to the majority of modern medical practices, but well accepted in Chinese medicine and by natural health practitioners is the fact (western research is beginning to preceive it and is trying to prove it) that there is a specific flow to how our body's systems work together and that many modern medical practices and techniques can throw that natural flow off course. It is a very individualized matter though. I believe all medical knowledge, old and new has merit for people in particualr circumstances at some point in time.

Excellent discussion; knowledge and personal intuition are the keys to health.

I agree that there are several factors in weight, but the fact remains, that genetically it has been scientifically proven that weight is about as heritable as height (within one or two percentage points). Of course, height is also affected by other factors, such as nutrition during growth stages, bone strength, etc.

In actuality, it is not accurate to state that anyone could look like the fitness models you see in advertising or workout DVDs. It is easy for someone for whom it IS possible to condemn those for whom it is not, telling them to work harder. In the end, some people can do more exercise than another and still be bigger, or appear less toned.

Hi, I agree with what Maddie is saying about weight being hereditary. My boyfriend is 6' 1" tall and 180lbs. He works contruction. He has not been to a gym in at least 2 years. Does not take supplements or eat a special diet. In fact his favorite meals are buffalo wings (high infat). He does not do situps or traditional ab workouts of anykind. He has an amazing physique complete with 6 pack abs (like Usher the singer), defined chest and arms and a nice butt and legs. Of course it doesnt hurt that he is lean naturally. But there are many guys who are 6' tall and 180 lbs and have stomachs and are not lean and defined like my guy. So there is a genetic predisposition that with even minimal exercise (like working construction) certain people will look really ripped.

Maddie, weight isn't all genetics. Anyone without odd medical conditions can have a lean body. I agree It's harder for some because of different metabolisms. If you eat more calories that you burn, you will gain weight. So if you eat less calories than your body needs, your body will start burning fat. The preceding ties in with metabolism of course. Theres ways to increase your metabolism. Anyone can lose the weight, trust me.

I never claimed weight was ALL genetics, just as height isn't all genetics. However, people's set points do differ, and weight is not the most accurate measure of health, though that seems to be the prevading medical myth of our day.

While it may be true that anyone is capable of losing weight, under the right (or wrong) conditions, it is not true that every person could lose it in a healthy way, be better for the losing, or even ought to.

Thanks for reading.

Wow, that answered questionsI have been carrying around like a large, extra bowel. I have seen that infomational late at night and if I hear it coming on, the channel changes to Wayne Dwyer or rich Dad, poor dad. You can't even trust the drugs monitored by the FDA anymore. let alone the patent medicines. Pretty interesting post ms. Thank you for the information. The digestive system is a marvel and merely needs foods like prunes, bananas, apples, nuts, and cereals to keep itself tuned up. Putting junk into your system of any kind isn't all that good for you and can clog up the plumbing...Me, I keep fruit next to me at all times.

Thank you

Good discussion...I've been researching products for years and trying various things to encourage detoxification since I have a daughter with enviromental allergies and chronic constipation and another with food allergies--I have some kidney/liver issues myself. I do believe that toxins in the body are reabsorbed if we're not eliminating well. I've tried aloe vera, all sorts of fiber supplements, epsom salts with olive oil, lemon juices cleanses, kidney, liver and colon cleanses, etc with varying results...(never any ropes though). I personally eat and drink lots of fresh greens and fruit in smoothies, juices and salads, whole grains, lots of water, low salt intake...but my kids don't always want to do that or just don't always (teenagers). Recently, I found an herbal tea called Dr. Miller's Holy Tea. You just make a gallon up for the week and drink it with your meals--so easy--and it is said to cleanse ALL your organs and blood and get rid of parasites (haven't seen them yet)....well, it's the first product that I can actually feel a huge difference with in my energy among so other things associated with a cleaner colon (3 times a day eliminations)...after less than a week on it...kids will start on it next month and it should be easy enough for them...I was just trying it out first. This seems to be a gentle and powerful natural product that we could live with easily...and live better with I already feel. I hear what is being said about scams, but I know different things work for different people...sometimes you have to try a few things to figure out what works best for you personally. I appreciate reading all the first hand experiences here. Thank you for taking the time to share it. Prune juice never did much at all for me--I have no idea why.

The only product that I thought wasn't a scam was Isagenix because of the high nutritive value in their cleanse product. I've also come across research that highly recommends some ingredients that are in their products that are not in otehrs.

This thread is interesting because I recently have been increasing the fiber in my diet. The water I take in is not nearly enough, now that I'm open to hear it. Those mainstays of human existence, water, raw vegetables and fruits, some protein and seed oils, some dairy, and all in moderation, with movement that is fun and natural.

Healthy living is easier done than said! thanks for the thread.

Best,

Want to keep your colon clean? Lots of fibre. Regular doses of acidopholis and if you're diet has been particularly bad for a period of time, fenugreek is best to reintroduce the floral to your digestive track. You'll know if your system is functioning properly if you have to use the washroom 10-15 minutes after a meal. If youre in and out in 5 minutes, you're in fairly good shape.

I believe these colon cleanse products are a joke. For me, two things work great 1) Kellogg's Smart Start cereal 2)A product called Effersyllium. However, it seems as though the major brands have knocked it off the shelves and the Metmucil's do not seem to work as good. FYI...the generic fiber Wal-Mart sells(EQUATE??) has worked better for me than the big brands. Seems like it is the cola wars-Royal Crown wins taste tests all the time but you-know-who is displayed the most.

Also, Fiber One does not work for me which was surprising. I switched because Smart Start supposedly contains a bit more fat and sugar and Fiber One was healthier. But it is back to Smart Start after this box of Fiber One.

Interesting reading. I am a supporter of Colonix by Dr. Natura. About 4 years ago, I stumbled upon the Dr. Natura website. I have suffered from constipation and gas/bloating since I was 19 years old (Now in my 40's). I tried laxatives, fiber, etc... I only went to the bathroom about 1-2 times per week. At the end of a work day I could have fueled my car with the gas stored up in body. I was miserable. I bought the product and faithfully used it for one month. I never saw worms, or strange bugs, thank goodnes. What did happen is that I no longer had gas or bloating ever. I naturally went to the bath room at least 1-2 times per day. This cleanse worked for 3 years. Recently I am experiencing bloating and gas again. Also a bit of constipation. I am using the product again. I think certain products work for certain people. I do not feel like Dr. Natura's Colonix was a scam to me. It helped me and I am grateful.

I just finish reading the article and all of the comments, love it! I actually have just started the Colonix Program, before reading this. Honestly I hope it does work or I am going to be highly upset, (I like to keep money in my pocket not put it in others). So here is the my situation I never use to have gas until my 20's,(I am in my early 30's now) now it happens so often I don't think twice about it. (Unless the pain because of it not being able to escape get too much. I actually had to go to the hospital twice due to that.) My breath never was a problem till recently, I also was a ball of energy, till the past year and a half. One thing though I am "regular" and usually do not strain.

I have tried the cereal, Metamucil and the husk and the results usually were sever cramping, gas, or constipation. Sometimes I get a lovely mix of the all. Some times even nauseous(weird). But I do eat allot of wholegrain bread, nuts and fruits.

So far I am on day 6 and I have been more "regular" than usual. The poo does look more funky than normal. I have seen some rubbery stuff. But I am not going to say it is parasites or anything like that. I am not a doctor and I do not have a lab at my disposal to verify what is evacuating. Here it is so far: my gas as gotten better. (I have so far had it in the mornings only.) My breath is also a lot better, even in the mornings. As for the skin(actually getting some zits!), energy (still hoping for that boost, to come) and weight ( I was hoping I would lose some pounds as a perk) no change. But then again I am on day six. The thing about it is I have not had any horrible cramps using it, so far.

As for the other topic of weight in the nature/nurture issue. I am 181lbs and 5'6" and have been so for now about 4 years consistently. BTW My mother said all the women in the family blew up as soon as we turn 25 years.I was no exception, one minute I am 125lbs eating everything under the sun next 181lbs watching everything I eat. I am actually the skinniest one out of them, sad to say.I can't even say it's baby fat since I have no children. And I have done everything From exercising 3x a week with personal trainers while being on weight watchers long term to a 10 week fitness camp. I acknowledge that I probably would be bigger with out the diet and exercise but it can really bother me sometimes when some of my friends never been to a gym and and eat every bad thing under the sun, by the truckload are a size 0 to 4 or have a six pack(In case there may be thoughts, as far as I know there are no eating disorders among my friends. If there were friends afflicted with the disease I would not put them as examples.)

I am even sad to say tried the master cleanse(Yes I know it only suppose to be for cleansing purposes, some times a person can get desperate. It get even more desperate when a doc is on your back telling you for how many years you have to lose the weight or your knees are going to get worse, since arthritis runs in the family). I was so cranky, my fiance was as miserable as I was. It was the hardest 2 days of my life( I am being honest, I like solid food with my juice.). So I do believe that genetics can have a part in how easily a person can ... I would like to say "mold" the body. But this is my humble opinion.

So these are my final thought so far. Colonix so far is okay in my book for regularity, but that opinion can change as I continue with it. . I really don't know about the parasites cleansing unless I see proof and lab reports with my own eyes. Weight is a definite mix of genetics and determination( you know the exercise and diet thing)

I can only give my personal experiences as a reference. These opinions are not meant to offend anyone, as I respected everyones opinions on the article. It is just meant give a plain persons insight.

Eli,

Good Luck with the Cleanse. It will work. Be glad you don't see worms and things. Wouldn't that freak you out anyway?

181, is not the end of the world. You are probably a size 14. Marilyn Monroe was a size 14. Also the national average size for women is a 16. So you are ahead of the game. It is interesting that you have the same problems as I have had. My weight gain started when I was about 30. I have to tell you, that if you want to lose the weight, WALK! WALK! WALK!. If you can walk 2-3 miles 4-5 days per week. You will lose the weight. Walk at a pace that gets your heart rate up. It is easy on your body and it tones every muscle. Ask you doctor. Like anything else you have to commit your self to it. My weight goes up and down because I get really ambitious, usually around this time of year. I walk every day. Ironically when you are walking for exercise, you start to really watch what you eat. It becomes a way of life. Before you know it you have lost 30 pounds. The thing that I always do is get down to a size 8 again and then get lazy. I also get busy with my kids and everyday life and use it as a crutch.

The cleanse will not be an instant weight loss program. You may not notice weight loss at all with it, but you will notice no more GAS/Bloating, etc... Gas in the morning is normal, but within the first 1/2 hour of waking you will go to the bathroom and get rid of what is causing the gas. It is like miracle. Take the product for the time recommended so that you get a complete cleanse. Isn't the tea really good at night time before bed?

Keep us posted.

I`m doing ALOT of research right now on COLON cleansing as I`m one of those people who have neglected my diet and admittedly have some bad habits that contribute to some internal ailments such as constipation, bloating , fatigue and probably other things I can`t see with the naked eye. This thread is excellent and is one of the top threads I have found discussing this matter. As many of you are, I am a consumer, who doesn`t want to be scammed, but want a product that works, so reading people`s experiences and arguments are important to me.

I want to throw somethings out there that I`ve determined, simply by research and discussions that I`ve had on the matter:

I believe that scientists have actually verified that there are over 100 species of various critters(parasites and such), that live in the human body. I know this makes many shiver at the thought, but in reality its natural for one species of life form to benefit from another lifeform. For the majority, they actually perform essential duties to help in our everyday functioning. BUT this leaves room for intruders, and I have had parasitical infections in my ear. I have a few friends who have had worms. It is quite creepy to share such personal encounters with people but really it has reinforced the fact that it is possible, we are ripe with uninvited invaders. Some do harm and some do not! Unfortunately, I`m not up enough on my parasites to know their benefit or harm.

Another confirmation that I have received, is that we can have upto 10lbs trapped in our system at any one time. I have confirmed this with several GP`s. I have read reports on the internet that people can have up to 75 pounds. I think that is a HUGE exageration, though, I guess it could be possible if you way 1000lbs. Sometimes, people and companies focus on the extremes, as scare tactics. But if you are of normal weight, unless you have a severe form of constipation, then the amount of fecal matter that is in your system, really is of a lesser amount.

Therefore, based on the above facts, I do believe it totally possible to have unwanted parasites, worms and other bacterial matter living in the accumulated fecal matter that is in our system. There are some parasites and worms that cause both minor and major health problems.(ie tapeworm). Again, I do not pretend to know every possible critter that lives in the human body, and how their habitat affects my living. This is why consumers are so gullible.. we get so freaked out by the unknown and worry about the `what ifs`!

So this is where the dilemma lies... What does it take bring my body back to good overall health especially internally?

My philosphy is two fold: There has to be RESTORATIVE MEASURES taken and then one should have a healthy MAINTENANCE...

This is where the problem lies...What does it take to cleanse your colon and restore your body to good health? Should we take special cleansing products, or with a change in diet, etc will our "well designed" bodies naturally recover ONCE we make the healthy changes necessary(as suggested by Maddie). I do agree our bodies our a very resilent and well designed to heal itself BUT I think we all can agree that over the years our bodies do deteriorate due to various injuries, ailments and diseases. The fact that we can have cancer, bacteria/parasitical infections, blockages, clottings, and other medical conditions that even our body cannot totally correct itself or recover from everything. But our body is resilient, so if we treat it right, it can certainly correct and heal itself from various ailments. BUT it is important that we start the the proper Restoration and Maintenance Processes Necessary.

First of all, based on the research I've done, it is absolutely apparrent that to be become healther, we need to make healthier lifestyle decisions.

1) Eat healthier foods - don't eat sugar, salt, MSG, processed foods and other unhealthy fats, pork products...Stick with ALL Natural foods, and if you really want to be heathy, BUY Organic, limit your intake of beef...and make sure you have a healthy dose of Fibre to stay regular.

2) Drink Lots of Water, Green Tea, and natural juice, stay away from colas and drinks with sugars in it...

3) Have a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day....(ie walking, running, etc) My mom walks daily and shes as fit as a fiddle....

4) Have hobbies that help you relax - when we're stressed - we tend to make poor diet choices

5) Quit bad habits that are detrimental to your health..

etc. etc. When you do these things how do you feel?

As for cleansing, I believe cleansing "the system" is a good jumpstart to following through with the above advice. We, know our own bodies, and I feel we are the best judge of the symptoms that we experience... THOUGH, I FULLY RECOMMEND you visit you GP before you choose to try ANY cleansing method. I fully understand that some GP's are hesitant to have people try non-FDA approved natural health products, as some products might actually do more harm than good. I'm quite upset that someone above suggested that Doctor don't want to treat things such as parasites, so they prescribe ineffective treatments to make money. THATS HOGWASH!!! Most GP's I know, are caring, and are concerned for the betterment of their patients health. I also believe there are effective natural products on the market, but GP's are hesitant to use them as they aren't FDA approved, and if something went wrong, they, the GPs could face serious consequences. This is why they leave it up to the patient to explore other avenues of treatment, especially if the GP has difficulties solving our medical condition.

As it comes to Colon cleansing solutions, it is important to be aware of Snake Oil, therefore research your treatments thoroughly. I have been disappointed that several Colon Cleansing treatments such as Colonix seem to target consumer fear in their advertising as opposed to realistic based advertising,,,unforunately this is a common advertising stategy for many advertising strategies. So even if the product does work, it leaves huge doubt in its credibility as a product. Maddie has perfectly summarized the misinformation.

BUT i actually know people who swear by Colonix. They have substantially proven that it works, and have said that though, the Colonix Gelatin is the most likely cause of the stringy green stuff that they poop out. The also have pooped out parasites, old fecal matter, and have corrected their bloatedness, constipation and put themselves on the fasttrack to better health. It appears there are other ingredients in Colonix that treat parasites aside from psyllium.

BUT i also have read some testimonies of users who have not have any results, and have had severe headaches and nausea from taking the product.

This illustrates to me that Colonix does work for some and not for others. This leads me to the conclusion that potentially that Colonix was not the right treatment solution for them.

Therefore, I am of the conclusion that this product does WORK for some but NOT for all. They have a 60 day money back guarantee, which they have been faithful to follow through with. (ONLY 2 complaints with BBB)

Other facts about Colonix. Its not FDA Approved. It has a satisfactory record with BBB, they only have ONE complaint the the product does NOT work. It is ranked as the best Colon Cleanse Treatment by some neutral natural health websites...There is one website that noted that the tea contains Senna which is an ingredient that should not be used longer than 7 days without consulting a physician. Also, there is another note that users do not drink enough water, then severe cramping and nausea is likely to occur.

As for the comment about psyllium gelatin forming in the colon, and coming out in the poop. If the advertising DID NOT promote this as, some of the gunk that collects in the system, I would feel that this gelatin IS necessary to kill and expel the collection of parasite, bacterial matter and

Phil  says:

oops to finish the miniessay... :P con'd

old fecal matter. It seems the gelatin has the ability cling on to whatever is leaching around the colon walls.

I think to summarize...Every cleansing products has benefits and hazards, what treatment one chooses really depends on comfort level...Just be aware of the product your using and the criticisms and cautions that are posted about that product.

I will be attempting to use the psyllium husk powder with prune juice as I change my diet. If this does not help me, after 2-3 weeks, I will try colonix, If that doesn't work after 45 days, I will ask for my money back.

Thanks for reading my argument. I this this was as much about me processing my thoughts, as it was giving my point of view to the thread...Take care!

If you want a great and inexpensive colon cleanse, and also see the results, then ask your doctor to send you for a colonoscopy, take the gentle laxatives prescribed, and then watch the screen as they insert the tiny camera in your colon…. ( no it does not hurt if you take the local anaesthetic) you will see the same thing as the doctor does, and you will see how pretty and pink and clean your colon is on your insides... no gunk of any sort, and all you took is some effective laxative....and did not eat solids for 48 hours…

After my colonoscopy I realised that this entire colon cleanse stuff is hogwash…

I did have lots of problems for two years….then I discussed the results of the colonoscopy with my doctor, and did some allergy tests and discovered that I am lactose intolerant… and now I take lactase pills (or dairy digestive pills) when I eat anything with cheese, yoghurt and milk products…. My symptoms almost completely disappeared… unless I forget that even cakes have milk products…

Our bodies are capable of dealing with all kinds of toxins, but it is not the colon that does that work, but the liver…. and the kidneys…the main thing the colon does is provide some beneficial bacteria, and absorb water from the wastes….

By the way do not take laxatives too often… it will weaken the muscles around your sphincter and you will then leak…. Yuck…

Now that I am fifty i had the dreaded colonoscopy which actuall wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Anyway I did the "prep" which cleans out your intestine and then stayed awake and watched the whole thing so I saw the inside of my whole intestine. Neither the prep nor the procedure revealed any horrible hidden built up debris and I didn't lose any weight, so much for all that junk hanging around in my body. ask anyone who has had this procedure and you will probably hear the same thing.

I just finished my second month on Dr Natura and plan to do one more month. I have suffered for so long with gas and bloating and IBS and GERD. This product has done wonders for me. I sleep better, digest food better, have more energy and a greater feeling of well-being. I have chosen not to spend a lot of time examining what comes out of me but the gerneral appearance is very different from what it used to be. I haven't really lost any weight but this isn't supposed to be a weight loss product. I am sure if I got back out walking (which I intend to do) I will drop some pounds. We do build up fecal matter in our systems. A friend of mine that has been a vegetarian for 15 years had some surgery recently that had showed she had passed meat. Remember she hadn't eaten meat for 15 years !! What does that tell you. Anyway I stand by Dr Natura. Their hotline is really good if you have any questions at all. Do you have any idea what would happ en if someone discovered an overall cure for all types of cancer, well to begin with he/she would put several million people out of work. Entire corporations would have to shut down putting even more people on the streets, someone trys to help people, and immediately the medical community jumps on their proverbial "It's gonna hurt you" wagon. And please don't bring the FDA into this or any other discussion, talk about QUACKS, these vpeople invented the cliche. M y grandmother passed away several years ago from unknown causes, so when they did the autopsey, they discovered 39 pounds of rotting fecal material in her colon, and toxins not recognized by the medical community, sooo maddy or whatever your name is, know this what is good for you, stick to it but please don't tell the rest of us how to live.

P.S. The product you are bashing works really well for me, my Doctor agrees, in fact all the physians have made positive comments concerning my recent improvement to my health.

To the last poster:

I believe I have read I have read somewhere that many elderly people will overdose their fiber supplement and underdose the necessary level of water - resulting in what I think was called an impacted colon. Could it be she had 39 pounds of that? I don't have an explanation for the toxins supposedly found.

To your comment about curing cancer would result in a lot of job/business loss. I suspect the economy wouldn't collapse - if anything, those scientists/businesses would focus on any of the hundreds of other diseases out there. :)

I suspect there are a lot of shill posters from sites like Drnatura - pushing how amazing their mixtures are as compared to other cheaper products. When you then take into consideration the posters' comments about how clean their colons looked on a colonoscopy after 16-48 hours of colon prep - it seems rather silly to even consider these 'rope' type movements.

Interesting site, good article Maddie. I am not a member of the site, but I appreciated your effort.

If a person eats three times a day but only goes to the bathroom every other day, there is a definite input, output problem.

Go back to what Phil said... YAHOO.... I suffered from a lot of the symptoms everyone is discussing in this blog and my first step was eliminating MSG from my diet. NOT EASY let me tell you. But I did and I lost over 10 lbs without trying. I went a step further and researched it and found all the terms they use in packaging to hide it. I also took roughly 95% of the hydrogenated oils out of my diet (it's almost impossible to do it 100%). I figure if it was made to sit on a shelf for years, I didn't want it in my body. I have never felt better in my life of 37 years! My husband has IBS and he is finding (through lots of work & will power) that my way is the right way. But beware! If you decide to go that route, it's a lot of work. It's a daily effort to follow and take in in baby steps or you will be overwelmed with what you can't eat. But, in the end, your patience will be rewarded~~

I've done the glass test when doing my colon clenase from Blessed Herbs. The husks do swell up to a soft gel which is the whole point of psyllium and why it is so effective in your colon !!! It DOES NOT form a rubber that is difficult to break and looks like old tyres. Try the test yourself and you'll see the difference. The psyillium is NOTHING like what comes out after 3 days on the cleanse. Since doing the cleanse I've gone from very irregular bowel movements to a couple a day. This means that any toxins in my food are being passed quickly and efficiently and I'm not keeping poop in my system which is potentially very harmful. Anyone having 3 poops a week is asking for serious trouble in the future. Why do you think 1 in 3 of us will get some kind of cancer. Our diets of course and the amounts of toxins we take in which are being stored in our bodies. The doctors have no idea at all about anything except drugs, drugs, drugs. It's not their fault, they are ignorant - ask this question - who funds the medical schools, the drug companies of course. Why would they want to educate doctors about anything but drugs? It's just not in their interest is is ?

I want to point out that when Elvis Presley died he had 60lbs of old fecal matter in his intestines, your intestines have pockets in them which can get old fecal matter stuck in them if you do not go to the bathroom often and this can lead to infection, it is entirely possible to have large quantities of poo stuck inside of your body at any given time. Not to get too graphic but I only went to the bathroom 1 time every other week, yes that is right ONE BM everyOTHER week. I started Dr.Naturas program 2 days ago and have gone 5 times in the past 2 days, that is amazing for me. Also, a good thing to point out is that we take in artificial substances everyday that our bodies just hold inside because it has no idea HOW to process it, a good example is margerine, it is all chemicals and not natural our intestines cannot process it there for it sits there forever unless you do something to get it out of there, ie colon cleansing.

I do agree everyone is out to make a quick buck but I do believe with all sincerity that Colonix works, I do not claim to have seen bugs or any crazy stuff but then again I am only on day 2. I have eaten so much junkie fried and fatty and processed foods for the pastever and I am telling you for the amount I have taken in not even 2/3 of it has come out. If you read dr.naturas ingredients, which I have gone through everysingle one and wikied it, you quickly realize not only are they fiberous but they ALSO have health benefits some help cleanse liver and kidney function while some help with blood circulation and heart function, so although things like psyllium husk DO infact work great at helping with regularity (colonix contains psyllium husk) you can't expect ONE herb to help with a WHOLE cleanse.

did you know that owners/promoters of businesses often post positive comments of their products, posing as (satisfied) customers? They can often be spotted by the detailed information they include in their post.

I wish I were a spokesperson because then I would be getting paid, I am just an 18 year old girl who doesn't poop except with dr.naturas product so it makes me happy, so sue me.

I think that it is funny that people believe such nonsense. Elvis did have an impacted colon due to DRUG USE! Read the Urban Legend info here http://www.snopes.com/horrors/gruesome/fecalcolon.

Moving on....(pun intended). All of the colon cleaners I've looked at all contain well known remedies in different ratios and different packaging at a price premium. Whether it is psyllium, bentonite, senna, or whatever--they all facilitate the body to produce bowel movements. I don't know that it is fair to call this product or that product a scam based on that. They are scams because of the actual costs of the ingredients in relation to the cost of the product. I think that is the main point that this page is trying to make.

Take this example, why pay $40 for psyllium husks with fancy herbs v's generic store brand psyllium at $5. This is the same marketing that says Tylenol brand is "better" than generic. All of these products will work, but they are priced at a premium that tends to be significantly higher than their ingredients. Not to mention, will not see fancy/glossy infomercials on TV selling generic psyllium husks anytime soon....

Also, if one of these products doesn't work, you should probably go see a doctor. I know that if were taking psyllium for several days and hadn't had a bowel movement, I would be very concerned!

As for COLON BLOW, I have to give someone credit for stealing a Saturday Night LIve skit "product" and selling it for real. Especially when you can get a really cool T-shirt with it....(In case you are wondering, I'm being sarcastic. What a tool.)

I too have found colon cleansing a positive experience. I use a daily cleanser and have reduced my migraines in half. Wouldn't do without them.

Seems Colonix got their people on the job. I am afraid that that is the case because of how you people seem to be selling this product. Who can I trust?

Isn't it interesting that even when you expose people to the actual truth, so many of them will still insist on supporting the lies they've been told. I don't think having a chemical engineering degree means you know thing one about the human body or nutrition. If his daughter or wife had a tapeworm, it's either because they visited a third world country and ate or drank, or they ate food that wasn't prepared properly, by someone who probably had feces on their hands when they prepared it. Getting tapeworms in America is highly improbable, otherwise.

Yes, those colon cleansing products are purposely loaded with things that give you rubber crap, because then they can lie to you and tell you that it's built up toxins. Therefore, you keep spending money on their products.

Ever talked to a doctor that performs colonoscopies? They prescribe that bottle of magnesium water, that makes you go, and the person is clean afterwards. They aren't crapping big gross, ropy strands. Just normal or watery bowel movements. Do they ever find evidence that anyone is loaded with caked on fecal matter? Absolutely not. And they look up there with microscopic cameras.

Researching other products so called "user reviews" on numerous different websites, I have found the same reviews, to the word, with different names on different sites. I think there is a big racket with companies hyping their own products under the guise of personal stories and customer reviews. Usually the ones with actual email addresses attached to them are more reliable, if you can actually contact the person. Still the internet can be a huge tool of deception.

Stumbled across this thread looking for colon cleanse info. An amazing array of opinions, ergo: Expensive products, drug co,/dr conspiracies, heral and natural remedies. It boggles the mind. The comment on colonoscopy prep and camera view is dead-on. Direct observation is truth.

But thank you all for your input. My bottom line: I'll stay with my physillium husk and juice +protein powder smoothie. Cheap, effective and remember...lot's of water.

Karen  says:

Cheaper than that, just dissolve 2 tbsp of sea salt in a glass of water, (drink quickly, it's gross, unless you're of the dirty martini persuasion) -you'll be on the bowel in a few hours. Drink plenty of water (min 4 glasses) and electrolytes. Don't do this if you've got high blood pressure or issues with sodium.

Thank you so much for your insight. I personally was alsmost scammed by the Colonix product. I am so glad I found this site. You saved me from spending over $100 on something I could get from Metamucil at my local walgreens.

THANK YOU! I WAS ABOUT TO JUMP! WALGREENS WILL MAKE THIS BUCK TOO! AS FOR THOSE WHO DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE. . . I AM REMINDED OF THE LADY WHO DROWNED BECAUSE SHE WAS WAITING FOR THE LORD TO HELP HER (PASSED UP A BOAT, AND A PLANE. . . ) YOU ALL HAVE HEARD SOME VERSION OF THAT STORY? WELL, SOME OF US DON'T NEED A BOLT OF LIGHTNING TO SMACK US IN THE HEAD TO UNDERSTAND.

BOTTOM LINE :THERE IS JUST NO SHORTCUT. . . NO PILL. . . NO MAGIC CURE FOR LONGEVITY. PERHAPS OUR TIME WOULD BE BETTER SPENT PURSUING THE IMMORTALITY THAT THE TRUE AND LIVING GOD OFFERS US RATHER THAN PUTTING SO MUCH STOCK IN THIS (FLESHLY) TABERNACLE? BUT WHAT DO i KNOW?

Thanks, Maddie, great explanation! I have been thinking about doing one of these colon cleanses but after reading this, and some of the posts, I'm wondering what on earth I was thinking. I'm one of those who had a colonoscopy and can testify that it's possible to obtain a clean, pink inside with nothing more than a day's juice fasting and a purgative. And although that does make you sit on the toilet frequently over a couple of hours, nothing nasty comes out!

Those who reply to say colon cleanse products work - Maddie's not disputing that. What she's saying is that there are lots of other inexpensive alternatives that work just as well.

Drinking at least eight glasses of water every day will keep your colon healthy.
