Bicycle Helmet Law in Columbus, Ohio

It has just came to my attention that a new bicycle helmet law is in effect in Columbus, Ohio.  This law states that anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter, roller-skates, in-line skates or a skateboard.  If they are caught not wearing them, they could be given a ticket or a warning.  This is supposed to be aimed more towards bicycle safety on the roads.  The fine for the ticket could be up to $25.

My opinion on this is that it is stupid.  I am 30 years old.  When I was a child, I road around on my bike without a helmet.  I took many of tumbles.  I always got up dusted myself off and went on my way.  Just to take another spill.  I am just fine.

But on the other hand, children have lost their lives from riding in the street without a helmet.  I am not totally in disagreement on this issue.  I just think this is a parents responsibility to ensure their child's safety.  We have so many criminals out on the road for the police to worry about a child without his or her helmet.

My children don't ride their bikes on the road, they just ride around in our apartment complex and on the bike trails by our home.  Will they be fined also?

Also, for anyone that may not be able to afford a helmet, you may want to check with your local fire department this week.

Are you for or against the helmet law?
