He gave up the end...
Last night I saw a documentary on Comedy Central about the upcoming movie Funny People. The documentary was a video diary made by writer/director Judd Apatow. It was a funny documentary about the evolution of the movie.
The movie is about an aging comic, played by Adam Sandler, and his battle with a life threatening illness. He is surrounded by up-and-coming comics, among them are Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill. The movie is full of real stand up routines. Apatow made all his actors write, and perform, stand up in front of real audiences. If his actors didn't get a laugh, then his characters wouldn't get a laugh in the movie. I found this to be interesting . Paid extras were brought in to a comedy club and told not to laugh unless they thought the act was funny.
Apatow had been cultivating this idea for decades, and mentioned that he doesn't think he'll ever make a better movie.
One thing I couldn't get past in the documentary was the fact that he gave away the ending. He told the viewing audience that his character gets better in the end, and has to live with the fact that he can't be the same person that he once was. Evidentally, the movie asks the question: Could you be the same person, if you got a second chance?
I would have gone to the movies to see this, if he hadn't given away the ending. Now, I will wait for Netflix. I wonder how many people feel the same way I do? Adam Sandler, while being a screwball in most of his movies, can play a sympathic character, and I would hate the thought of him dying. Now, we know he doesn't, and we pretty much know that everyone lives happily ever after. In a way, that kind of sucks. I got into a fight with my sister, when I was in college, and she told me who "Keiser Soze" was.... before I had seen the movie. I was so mad at her, I almost lost my buzz. I hate spoilers. To this day, I have never seen The Usual Suspects all the way through.
In closing, I just have to wonder what Apatow was thinking.

Lol The Usual Suspects isn't a Movie if you know the ending, as for Sandler he has gone of the boil although I liked him in Bedtimes Stories even though it was a pile of crap. I like Judd Apatow. He's a young up and coming director and has yet to really stink up the joint. Adam Sandler on the other hand made too many movies too soon, just like Jim Carrey before him. I'm with you. I'll wait to see it on Netflix or Redbox.
