Comparison of tuition costs of higher education around the world

Studying at university is an expensive investment. Tuition fees have a disincentive effect on the poor and middle-income students. There has been a general trend towards marked increases in tuition in recent years, even in countries where tuition fees have generally been much lower than average. For example, Canada has seen its tuition fees more than double in the last ten years.

Tuition fees can vary between courses, institutions, and whether the students are resident or international. This hub compares tuition costs of full time undergraduate programmes in America (Canada, United States), Europe (UK, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands), and Australia.

Northern America

United States

The tuition cost in USA varies from $5000 to $30000 per year. About $9000 for resident students and $20000 for international students.

Canadian

Canadian universities are cheapest among UK, USA, Australia. Average domestic tuition is around $9,000, and international tuition around $25,500.

Europe

In recent years, the high-tax Europe has been considering reforming higher education and moving towards a system that charges users. Austria is intensely debating university tuition in the parliament. Six German states call on the parliament to terminate the piece of legislation that exempts college students from paying tuition. In addition, universities in Belgium are beginning to charge an enrolment fee of 500 euros which is same for EU and non-EU students (non-EU students are charged additional 500 euros for social security), while Holland and Italy charge an enrolment fee of 1,000-1,500 euros. Dutch universities charge students of certain departments such as business departments tuition as much as 5,000 euros and students of graduate schools tuition as much as 8,000 euros.

UK

In UK, the maximum tuition fee amount that can be charged to EU students is £3,145 a year (increasing yearly by no more than the rate of inflation). Average tuition for domestic students is around £3000, and for international students about £10,000 a year.

Ireland

€12000 (Euro) per year for international students. EU students pay € 900 registration fee.

France

France has 82 universities, teaching 1.5m students. All are public; none charges tuition fees; undergraduate enrolment charges are a tiny €165. All lecturers are civil servants. Universities cannot select students, who can apply only to ones near them. The results speak for themselves. Not a single French university makes it into the world's top 40 universities.

In France, there is no difference in tuition fees between European and Non-European students. Therefore, policies officially search to improve the quality of the foreign students they receive, making a selection based on excellence and discipline of study. They intend to avoid a "mass phenomenon" of unwanted students in French universities who are not highly motivated and who mainly seek to obtain a visa and to stay in France. In Britain, there is a will to attract a large number of overseas students who pay high tuition fees and who supply important funding to British higher education.

Germany

Germany universities now charge 1000 euro enrolment charge per year, regardless whether the students are from EU or non-EU countries.

Australia

Australia had free education until 1988. Across the English-speaking world, Australia imposes mid-range fees. Nowadays, most full time degree and post graduate degree cost between AUD 10000 to 20000 per annum.

I wonder what the college attendance rate is in Europe and the quality of education. When i was in Italy i was told that the public schools were surprising much better than private schools. Apparently its where parents send their dumb kids because they can pay off the teachers. Cool stats

Very useful information, but not accurate.

Next time, rather skip personal comments, such as about quality of Franch Universities, because they are not objective - based on facts. (I am not French)

Rachel  says:

Makiwa,

Quebec has the cheapest tuition for residents of its province, about $1800-$2000 per year. But if you are an out-of-province student, the price doubles, and if you are an international student, it's around $13,000 a year. There are some international students (like those from France and francophone countries) that get the in-province rate.

Other Canadian provinces have different tuition rates. Public universities in Nova Scotia are some of the most expensive in Canada. International students generally have to pay more, but could possibly get government assistance.

Irish colleges are cheap, yes they cost money for international students but if your a resident it's payed for you, all you pay is a few hundred every year for enrollment, it even depends what college if you go to tallaght it's maybe 700 a year while it may be more in other schools like trinity, but you can get a grant to even cover the few hundred + cost of books + you get more if you live a certain distance away they go to about 1000-3000 euro. You get more in certain cases

Graduated poverty in US higher ed   says:

It would be interesting to see more education systems outside the United States in a larger sample. This is a good start as I have found scant information on this subject matter except the usual dogmaatic rhetoric:

US Higher ED is the best! This has Always been questionable in my mind but now even more so as I discover additional unbiased information created outside the United States Media Machine

US Higher Education will cost you a lot of money! But don't worry! If you are poor, just take out a student loan (s) which are, as always, unforgivable, unendable even in bankruptcy abject poverty, old age, disability disaster or some other personal life hardship.

Additionaly these student "aide' loans truly aide the banks and lenders with the fine print mandatory consent from student to all listed and future less than fair terms in the loan agreement. These 'terms' are alterable, at the lender's whim and naturaly improve the circumstances for the lender. Yes the greatest financial advantage, best interests, and economic enjoyments of the bankers are all that matters

The changes and policy variances are never advantageous to the borrower, at all.

Alas, via the sudent loan agreements, the poor former student can enter into the joys of modern democratic surfdom as he joins the legions of other college educated wage slaves for the next decade at least. The more you learn...the longer you burn in the fiery unforgivable hells of Federally forged and fat fed Student Loan Repayment Plans. Yes these devils never ever ever quit and can charge as much as they want in compounded interest, fees, and the like. They can use the network to intercept, freeze, garnish or place liens upon wages, pensions, disability insurance, personal property, or any other sources of survival and pieces of ASSets, no matter how meager, no matter how destitute their plunderinfg leaves you.

If you were gullible enough to agree to their student loan...you may as well sold your sole to the devil himself. You belong to them now...and they own you and all you create so be prepared to lose everything they can get their greedy hands on.

From what I understand, from the responses of surveys, someone who goes to a 2 year Community College in USA is at a higher level of pay and education then 85% of the rest of the world for about $10-15,000 total. Anyone who gets a 4 year (even if its Community for 2 years then State for 2 years) will be at a much higher level in other countries, except the US where there levels will be lower then others. So it is a great investment to be able to go to an American College, it would better the life of someone in other country. But those are just my thoughts.

Some places in the U.S. used to be more reasonably priced. My home state of California used to pick up a much larger percentage of the cost of a college education at one of the California State Universities. While it is still subsidized, it is nothing like it was 20 years ago. Not even close.

Within Canada, in Quebec the province makes recognition that Quebec parents pay provincial taxes that go to Quebec universities, so charge Quebec students far less than Canadian students coming in from other provinces. In fact, as a Quebec student, your fees are real low, probably among the lowest in the Western world(?), certainly I think probably the lowest in North America; this seems right to me; thousands upon thousands of Canadians have student loans of 20, 30 and 40 thousand dollars, and needless to say, this creates huge financial burden at a time when young people are just starting out in the world...

Sorry ! The results don’t speak for themselves… The “Shangai ranking” entitles you to suggest the poor quality of French universities. Poor schools, deprived of tuition fees, unable to attract the best students, required “by law” to accept any applicant, even the worst ones! The “Shangai ranking” opened or reopened useful and interesting debates on the cost of higher learning, the way universities could combine quality and democratic access to that higher learning that we consider as a right, and not only as an economic deal. The “Shanghai ranking”, as some of its conceivers recognized, does not say it all: for instance, as the Physics Nobel Prize winner Albert Fert pointed out a few weeks ago, it does not take into account a large part of French achievements and publications in research, not to speak of liberal arts, that are unknown to it. It should also be compared with other rankings, such as ScienceWatch’s evaluations among many others…: “among the 147 top-performing countries in all fields, ranked #5 for citations, #5 for papers, and #23 for citations per paper. This feature includes rankings in all fields for ”. I will not elaborate here on the fast changing pace of many universities (which for instance are beginning to compete with private business schools or organize more and more professionally-oriented training programmes). At the same time, France is one of the world’s most productive countries and it would be surprising if foreign companies operating in France, the fifth or sixth economic power in the world, would hire more than 2.2 million French workers if they did not consider they find there well-trained and qualified executives and researchers. If foreign students account for 12 % of the total student body in French universities, more than 20 % in engineering schools, around 32 % in our business schools), one third of the PhDs, I guess that all of these people are not completely stupid or hopeless. You rightly stressed that welcoming foreign students in French universities is not currently a business, since they are charged the same (very low) tuition fees as European Union citizens. It thus makes it possible to improve the average quality of foreign applicants, as you pointed out. In fact, there is a selection, rather drastic and sometimes labelled hypocritical, which takes place during the first four years, first among French students. Students admitted in the fifth year and later on are very competitive and known to be successful and appreciated when they study or work abroad.

Nyasha  says:

Hi

Take it from an international student who has done two years of college in the US (Washington DC) and is now based in Canada. It's a business and not a service to the student. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the world owes me anything nad I am more than willing to work myself to the bone just so I can fatten up in my latter years. Studying in the states is a little too costly.

Moreover, what you put in is not what you get out. I have a friend studying to be a shrink in Paris, France and I am a prospective med school student. I feel a little shortchanged at the end of each day since she and I will still get paid well but I have to go to financial hell and back. (I won't even go into the medschool aspect of my life - because I am not a complainer - I knew what I was getting into and noone forced me).

I am one of the school of thought that believes that education should be universally accessible, even if it is at some French institution that has no reputation. I'm not asking to be a Harvard grad, I just wanna go to school and not have to leave an arm and a leg at the financial aid office!

Anyone out there feel me? Or do I sound snobby?

The US College system is the most expensive in the world and not always the best concerning quality.

Let's take Germany for comparison, most German Landers(states)offer free tuition and a handful charge tuition but less then $1000 Euros Yearly.

German Students sometimes attend Multiple Universities during their studies and maybe at the same time which offers them a level of freedom not seen in the USA or many other countries. The Tuition like I said is usually free and the states that tried to charge tuition are now going back to free tuition.

If you are from a poor back ground and do not meet certain financial criteria the German Government will offer up to 600 Euros monthly for living expenses usually a 300 Euro monthly no interest loan and another 300 euro monthly grant or welfare payment, sometimes the entire 600 euros a month is offered totally under the welfare payment and free. The Student can get this $600 Euro monthly payment up to 5 years while they study. The Germany University system also offer student apartment on and off campus which cost around 200 euros monthly including electricity and heat. Also students are given student transport passes for buses and subways usually costing around 180.00 Euros a year and health insurance is also included for German Students who get the above 600 euro monthly welfare payment otherwise insurance costs around 50 Euros a month. The 180.00 euros fee for transport also includes student activities on campus and so forth.

Students also can find pubs and cafeteria eateries which will offer them 1 euro meals when they show their student passes.

Germany also offers a Technical/Vocational dual education system for those who do not attend the Unversity which is highely respected and leads to how wages in many cases.

A German Corporation hires a worker as an apprentice and trains them for free while paying them a salary, usually around 10-12 euros an hour and since healthinsurance is universal the student is covered! This health insurance covers 100% of costs and also most of the dental and eye care or a large portion of it.

The Apprenticeship may last anywhere from 2-5 years. The student/worker goes to work perhaps 3 times a week to the factory, office or whatever the vocation is and then attends 2 days of classes learning both in the classroom and on the job and they are paid for both. The Company picks half of the tab up and the German Government picks up the other half.

Tell me what the US does for the citizens here?

The most expensive tuition in the world and a job market only producing jobs in the healthcare sector, no other sectors of the economy have been producing jobs for years now except a few Government positions and the housing bubble which now has burst. The USA is losing 500,000 jobs a month now and has been losing jobs for 13 months. Also from 2000-2007 the US job market was the weakest since the great depression. We are 12 million jobs short of population growth since 2000 and it's getting worse with the economic collapse.

It is not uncommon for a College Graduate to have 100,000 in debts when they Graduate and that is why most do not finish their studies and drop out.

The jobs are not being created for many of the student graduates and they most either work as waiters or waitresses, walmart, or in the healthcare field or be unemployed and that is the situation. They are lucky to get any job now!!

If the next year goes according to the forecast and we lose 3 million more jobs when 2010 rolls around the us will have the same number of people working as in 2000 or basically the USA will not have produced any new net gain in jobs for a decade while we need 150,000 jobs a month to keep up with population growth.

That will put us 18 million jobs short of population growth and this does not even include those who work part-time and want full time work, those who have been laid off and then find a new job with huge pay cuts and benefit cuts, etc.

The USA also has a very weak vocation/technical training system compared to other modern nations such as Germany.

Germany has 86% of it's working age citizens either trained in a Vocational/Technical Degree or University Degree!

70% of the US workforce are not able to compete with Creditor Nations or our main Competitors.

The situation grows worse because the babyboomers are about to retire and they along with the world war 2 Generation are the most educated either vocationally or University wisein our history.

Things were very good in America at one time!

The US Health Care is the most expensive in the world and 50 million people have no insurance while another 150 million only have partial coverage and if they become ill even with insurance, they can lose everything with medical bills!

The Life Expectancy of a US Citizen compared to other countries is now 48th and falling. The US ranks 70th in Citizens living heathly without injury or illness so that 48th is soon to be alot lower if this keeps up.

The Life Expectency tells the most importat story about how a country really is doing and this above stat should indicate America is in deep trouble.

Part of the country or regions have life expectency levels around 50 years old!

This is do to the Rich-poor gap and weak economy.

Education is one of the most important things one can gain because of the skills and critical thinking that are learned.

It prevents a few rich oligarchs from taking over a country and abusing it like a third-world colony.
