Many people would like to start composting for their garden but do not know where to begin. Here are some easy to use tips that can get you started today.

  • You can compost almost anything that you use in your home. Newspaper, coffee grinds, fruit peels, and more. As long as it is biodegradable you can safely compost it. The only exception is anything from animals products. Meat, butter, cheese, and such can cause a strong smell and can attract animals to your compost pile.
  • Worms are a great addition to any compost pile. Using worms to help break down the material is simple. Use a shallow box to store your compost in, keep the composting material moist and in a dark place, and allow good air flow to your composting. Then just sit back and let your worms do the rest.
  • Shred the material for more effective composting. Smaller pieces have more surface area, and more surface area means more room for composting to happen.
  • You can either leave your compost out in the open in a heap, or store it in a special box. Either way you need to keep the material moist and turn it to keep it properly aerated. This will help speed up the composting process.
  • Composting takes time. Some use a slow method that can take 6 months or more, while others use a faster method that can still take 3 months to finish. Do not expect instant results, this is something you have to be able to devote time to.

There are some basic tips you can use to prepare yourself to begin composting. If you would like more information the link below is a great lace to learn more.
