Computer Memory

The kind of computer memory being referred to normally is the RAM or rapid access memory. This is a special memory storage device that acts like the short-term memory of human beings. It is meant to facilitate the functioning of current applications and data. RAMs have been designed in such a manner that they allow quick access to computer processors thereby insuring that all applications are fulfilled smoothly. However this is relevant to the amount of memory your computer is supported with.

RAM is regarded as being the fastest memory that allows for quick reading and writing to computer processors. The speed at which these applications can be fulfilled varies considerably when you compare it to other storage devices such as the hard disk, floppy disks and CD-ROMs.

It is important to understand that under no circumstances can this kind of computer memory store data on a permanent basis. Rather it loses all the data that has been stored on it the moment you turn off your computer. Once you turn it back on again all the necessary data is transferred back onto the RAM from where the computer’s processor can pull it out as and when it requires.

Your computer system is also supported by another kind of memory that performs the function of permanent data storage. This works in compliment to the short-term memory device mentioned above. Their complementary function can be compared to the manner in which our short-term memory works in cooperation with our long-term memory. In its essence the main function of RAM is to facilitate the current workload. In order to be able to perform all applications as desired you need to have fast working hard disk and RAM.

The market is loaded with different kinds of memory cards that you can incorporate computer system. The first technology to be introduced was known as the SDRAM. Today these are considered to be out dated although you may be able to find them at very affordable rates. You would be much better off going for DDR RAM which is based on a more recent technology. This kind of memory is a very cost effective yet efficient and fast solution. If you want to go for the top-of-the-line product than DDR2 memory is highly recommended as it is the fastest random access memory developed up till now.

Before you select a particular type of memory for your computer it is important to read up on your motherboard manual. This will give you information regarding the kind of memory that your motherboard has the capacity to support. Since there are different manufacturers producing different kinds of motherboards the kind of support they offer varies from product to product. In certain cases you will find motherboards that have separate slots for SDRAM and DDR. Another thing that you need to keep in mind is that these two different kinds of memories cannot be used together and hence you will have to decide one over the other.

Computer memory cards have specific speeds at which they operate. Similarly they have distinct megahertz upon which they are programmed. You need to make sure that your motherboard supports the speed and the megahertz of the kind of memory upgrade you are looking for.
