Computer eye strain is an annoying, but very common problem in the work force. It can affect anyone who stares at a monitor for a long period of time. Whether you are a writer, a telemarketer, a student, a receptionist, or working any other job that requires a lot of research online, strain on your eyes can make your days a lot longer and a lot harder. So, you are likely wondering how to avoid eye strain.

Computer eye strain is characterized by overworking the eye muscles. This will cause them to become sore and tired and, essentially, strained. Similar to the way your muscles hurt after a long workout, computer eye strain affects your eye muscles, causing them to either blur, water, dry out or itch. In addition to the eye discomfort, computer eye strain can also cause headaches and a sore or stiff neck.

The best defense against this form of eye strain is to simply walk away from the screen. However, this is usually not an option. After all, your computer may be an essential part of your career and your entire life! So, instead of quitting your day job, you can take the following treatment options to avoid computer eye strain.

How to Avoid Computer Eye Strain

When it comes to avoiding eye strain, set up an appointment with your optometrist to ensure that there is no underlying problem. Sometimes this form of eye strain can be cured with reading glasses or other eye wear. Sometimes you can take eye drops to soothe your dry eyes. You optometrist may be able to show you some eye exercises to control the pain associated with eye strain.

Easy-At-Work Eye Strain Treatment Options

To avoid eye strain, you need to make your work environment as comfortable as possible for your eyes. Adjust your monitor so that it is directly in front of you about 20 to 28 inches from your eyes. Make sure you check the lighting to reduce the glare. Sometimes eye strain can be cured simply by readjusting your monitor color setting and closing a blind to keep the sunlight glare away. Another way to cure eye strain is to keep your monitor clean from dust which can cause glare problems. Make sure you also position your chair and keyboard in a comfortable position. Your entire work area should be ergonomically friendly to avoid all computer-related discomfort.

Avoid Computer Eye Strain with Software Reminders

However, the most important thing you can do is simply rest your eyes. Your eyes, like every other part of your body, need a break once and a while. Try to establish five minutes every hour that you focus on another task away from the computer. You can take a walk, talk to the boss about a problem, get some water or work at your desk on different tasks that do not require the computer. If you have trouble reminding yourself to move away from the screen, there is eye strain software that acts as a timer, reminding you to get up and give your eyes the rest they need and deserve.
