What is a Computer Virus?

A computer virus is a programme or a set of computer programs designed to damage, harm or alter the way a computer operates, without the knowledge or consent of the user.

There are huge numbers of computer viruses carrying varying degrees of risk. Some of these viruses are extremely malicious and can delete or damage useful files and programmess. Few others are less destructive, but prove debilitating by jamming resources, causing systems to crash with consequent loss of data. Some viruses hit as soon as they reach a machine and signs of infection can be observed immediately. Others can remain hidden until getting activated by a future event.

There are two types of computer of a virus:

1. Self executing computer virus: These are those viruses that attach itself to another programme on a computer and get activated when the program is used.

2. Self-replicating computer virus: These are Computer Viruses that spread from machine to machine and across networks. This virus usually copies itself to other programme on a computer.

Some of the most common computer viruses are: MyDoom, Bugbear, Klez, Lovebug, Melissa, Bubbleboy, Code Red, Nimda

Types of computer virus

There are a large number of viruses; they fall under following 3 main types:
