Conceptrol Vaginal Contraceptive Gel
If you're in a monogamous relationship and needn't worry about contracting sexually transmitted diseases, but still want to prevent pregnancy, you've got several options available and a vaginal contraceptive gel is one of them. Conceptrol is a popular form of birth control and it's manufactured by Ortho, the same people who make The Pill. There are other brands of vaginal contraceptive gel and they may be used similarly, but be sure to check the instructions in case they vary.
What is a vaginal contraceptive gel?
Conceptrol is, essentially, a spermicidal gel which you insert prior to intimacy. It will kill sperm on on contact and therefore prevent pregnancy. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other forms of birth control, such as condoms. It doesn't contain any hormones and a prescription is not required to purchase it.
How do you use Conceptrol?
It's quite easy, really. Each box comes with pre-filled applicators. No more than one hour prior to intimacy you would insert the contents vaginally. If you're intimate more than once per night you will need to use a new application each time. The gel is clear, will not stain clothes or bedding and it is also tasteless. Note that if you decide to douche afterward you will need to wait 6 hours before doing so.
What is the efficacy?
Conceptrol can be used alone or with condoms. Obviously, when combining the two you're going to have more protection, but using contraceptive gel by itself is said to be 94% effective at preventing pregnancy, which is higher than the Sponge and other methods. Note that it will not protect against STDs.
Things to note about vaginal spermicidals:
If you're allergic or sensitive to Nonoxynol-9 this may not be the best solution for you. If you experience any discomfort during its use be sure to avoid using it in the future until you've ruled out an allergy.
While they may be convenient, they must also be used correctly and consistently to prevent pregnancy. Your birth control method is only as effective as you make it.
You must use the entire dose; do not try to ration the applications in order to make them last longer.
Where can I buy contraceptive gel?
You can buy Conceptrol over the internet at places like Amazon.com or at your local drugstore. If you can't find Ortho's Conceptrol brand, you can try others such as Blairex Encare, Gygel, and Advantage 24.
