Confessions of a Shopaholic The Movie Review
68Where should this movie review begin? The thread that ran through the entire movie was "The Girl with the Green Scarf."
As the movie title reads, the movie was basically about a pretty young journalist who was a shopaholic. Her name was Rebecca Bloomberg and she could not turn down a sale. There was a sample sale where she fought for a pair of Gucci designer boots and actually won.
Rebecca lost her job at a magazine company and strapped with debt had to locate another job. She was referred to Dante West a stepping block to the major company of her choice. Rebecca gave into her desire to purchase a sheer emerald scarf ( a bidder at the end of the movie called the scarf the color of money). Rebecca wore the scarf to a job interview where she met Brandon who had given her $23.00 she needed to purchase the green scarf at the hot dog stand. She met the same guy at an interview and tried to hide the green scarf hoping that he would not remember her. Sure enough, he remembered her and it looked like love at first sight because she kept fouling up her job later in the movie and he instead took her to luncheons and important meetings.
Rebecca's new boss and love interest eventually hired her at the Dante West company and she did quite well. Rebecca wrote the article called the Girl in the Green Scarf that went international taking the company to a higher level of performance. The article was inspired by a tag on a sweater that stated 5% cashmere when the buyer must have thought the sweater was 100% cashmere. Though Rebecca had been lying to debt collectors about her inability to pay her bills, she found a mislabeled tag in a cashmere sweater and succeeded in writing an article that attracted Brandon, her new boss.
Brandon liked the article about the Girl in the Green Scarf and invited Rebecca out for dinner. Rebecca and Brandon was met with a beautiful tall blonde stunning looking model with georgeous long legs. Brandon left the party with the tall beautiful blonde and Rebecca was saddened. The article Rebecca wrote drew attention to her and she was invited to a TV broadcase with Brandon to introduce her new article The Girl in the Green Scarf. A debt collector followed Rebecca all the way to the TV show and embarrassed her in front of the TV audience and the viewers when he told everyone that Rebecca had lied about her reasons for not being able to pay off the debt.
Rebecca lost her job and Brandon was offered anoher job but he declined because he wanted his own company. Rebecca returned to the support group for shopaholics and decided to sell all of her shoes and clothes with their help. She raised enough to pay the debt collector off however she returned the favor and paid him about $16,000 in jars of pennies shrewed all about his office. The movie viewers felt vindicated as well as Rebecca Bloomberg. In the process of raising money, Rebecca auctioned off her green scarf reluctantly and found out that the silent bidder was none other than Brandon.
The two eventually met again and she explained to Brandon that she shopping made her feel better about the world and when the world gets bad again then she has to shop again. Brandon convinced Rebecca with a kiss that a relationship of love is beter than a sale of any kind. Brandon returned with love for "The Girl with the Green Scarf."
The Confessions of a Shopaholic was meant to be a comedy with Rebecca sliding across the board meeting table to catch a debt collector's call and hiding in a rack of clothes to retrieve a letter sent to the wrong company. But you may shed a little tear when she is embarrassed in front of national TV and almost loses her love and her friend who was about to get married. The movie reminded others of over shoppers who uses multiple cards to make an overpriced purchase because the credit limit had been reached. Also the movie bought home having to retrieve a card frozen in ice to deter spending desperately being chipped to spend again. The Confessions of a Shopaholic rivals Bride's War in relationship to friendship and is a better movie than He's Just Not That Into You with Jennifer Aniston.
