If you are using Fedora Linux 9 or later, for configuring DSL broadband connection please read the blogpost at buzznol by clicking on this link.

In the past, connection to the internet was only possible with dial-up modem. However, these days high speed internet connection is available from the telephone companies using DSL technology. With DSL, fast internet connection is commonly available with download speed of around 1Mbps to 2 Mbps. In this article, I'll show you how to connect to DSL using PPPoE in Fedora. Please note that for DSL connection configuration in Fedora you should have a working Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in your computer and DSL modem should be connected to the computer using Ethernet cable.

Step 1:

Log on to your X-windows KDE desktop as root. On main programs menu select Settings and click on Network item in the sub menu as shown in the following snapshot.

Step 2:

Now the Network Configuration box will open as shown in the next snapshot.

Step 3:

Click on New item on the menu bar. Now Add new Device Type box with Select Device Type caption will open as shown in the next snapshot.Select xDSL connection in the list of Device type as shown in the snapshot and click on Forward.

Step 4:

Configure DSL connection box will open under Add new Device Type. Here select your appropriate Ethernet device (NIC) from the dropdown box. Next enter your DSL Provider name. Now select the Account type which commonly is Normal. Then enter your DSL user name and password in Login name and Password text boxes and click on Forward.

Next you will be asked to confirm the information provided. If you want to make changes click on Back or otherwise click on Forward.

Now you will comeback to Network Configuration box with your newly configured xDSL type entry as shown in the next snapshot.

To connect to internet select the xDSL entry in Network Configuration window and click on green Activate button on the toolbar.

To disconnect the internet connection click and select xDSL entry in the Network Configuration box and click on red Deactivate button on the toolbar.

Dear Jay,

I want to try Open Suse, but before I install it I need to know how to set up my dataone broadband connection (adsl) with this OS. Could you help?

Thanks,

Hi Newar,

You should be able to configure Dataone ADSL using YAST in Open Suse.

However I 'll still check Open Suse OS in couple of days and get back to you.

Any time I install a Linux OS, I don't need to configure anything. The OS automatically picks up my ethernet connection upon installation. It asks me if I wan to establish a connection now and I enter yes. I then get a Congradulations message telling that I have successfully established a connection. I have used Linspire, Kubuntu, Xandros, Fedora, PCLinux, and now Ubuntu, and they are all the same. If it, for some odd reason, does not work, do the following. Shut down the system and unplug your modem. Plug in your modem and let it boot up completely, Once it is finished, start up your computer. Youd should have it up and running. I even have a multiport and wireless router running with no problem. Ubuntu immediately detected my wifi and connected. Try it.

By output modes I mean does it have a ethernet RJ 45 port and/or a usb port to connect a cable to the computer. How have you connected your modem in windows. Explain the wiring from telephone wall jack to your computer. As per my knowledge I gathered from internet, zxdsl 831(all)supports 1 LAN or 1 USB connection. I gathered my info about zxdsl 831(all) from following URL http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-broadband/9411-

Ankit  says:

yes sir it connected to USB port

To make it work under Linux either you get linux driver for usb connection. (I doubt you will get a lix driver for USB modem) or simply connect modem using ethernet cable from RJ45 port of your modem to RJ45 port of your ethernet(NIC) card in the computer. You will also require a ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors to make the connections. If you don't have a ethernet cable and card, you may buy it from the Computer Store.

Are you using a laptop or a desktop?

After connecting ethernet card you will have to re-configure PPPoE dialer for DSL connection in Windows too, using New Connection wizard under Network Connections in Control Panel.

Good luck!!

hello!

i am new user of Linux. I recently installed fedora 10 and it has trouble connecting to my DSL connection.

My DSL provider doesnt provide any ''provider name'', ''username'', or password. U just insert the LAN cable coming from the modem (thompson) into the socket and automatically detect the IP and DSN in windows and the connection is up and running.

However in Fedora nothing seems to work, i tried establishing new xDSL connection, but the trouble is it doesnt go forward without inserting username and password of the DSL provider which my provider doesnt require them. Setting up a new ethernet doesnt go better since i have the radio dot next to ''obtain ip automatically via dhcp'' switched off so i cant choose it! i can only set the ethernet with obtain IP statically:(

I hope you can help me with that!

I apprciate your time.

Dear Christian,

You'll need to put dsl modem in bridge mode by accessing modem interface from your web browser. Typical modem interface ip is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254. Good luck!!
