In the past, connection to the internet was only possible with dial-up modem. However, these days high speed internet connection is available from the telephone companies using DSL technology. With DSL, fast internet connection is commonly available with download speed of around 1Mbps to 2 Mbps. In this article, I'll show you how to connect to DSL using PPPoE in Fedora. Please note that for DSL connection configuration in Fedora you should have a working Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in your computer and DSL modem should be connected to the computer using Ethernet cable.

Step 1:

Log on to your X-windows KDE desktop as root. On main programs menu select Settings and click on Network item in the sub menu as shown in the following snapshot.

Step 2:

Now the Network Configuration box will open as shown in the next snapshot.

Step 3:

Click on New item on the menu bar. Now Add new Device Type box with Select Device Type caption will open as shown in the next snapshot.Select xDSL connection in the list of Device type as shown in the snapshot and click on Forward.

Step 4:

Configure DSL connection box will open under Add new Device Type. Here select your appropriate Ethernet device (NIC) from the dropdown box. Next enter your DSL Provider name. Now select the Account type which commonly is Normal. Then enter your DSL user name and password in Login name and Password text boxes and click on Forward.

Next you will be asked to confirm the information provided. If you want to make changes click on Back or otherwise click on Forward.

Now you will comeback to Network Configuration box with your newly configured xDSL type entry as shown in the next snapshot.

To connect to internet select the xDSL entry in Network Configuration window and click on green Activate button on the toolbar.

To disconnect the internet connection click and select xDSL entry in the Network Configuration box and click on red Deactivate button on the toolbar.

Dear Jay,

I want to try Open Suse, but before I install it I need to know how to set up my dataone broadband connection (adsl) with this OS. Could you help?

Thanks,

Hi Newar,

You should be able to configure Dataone ADSL using YAST in Open Suse.

However I 'll still check Open Suse OS in couple of days and get back to you.

Any time I install a Linux OS, I don't need to configure anything. The OS automatically picks up my ethernet connection upon installation. It asks me if I wan to establish a connection now and I enter yes. I then get a Congradulations message telling that I have successfully established a connection. I have used Linspire, Kubuntu, Xandros, Fedora, PCLinux, and now Ubuntu, and they are all the same. If it, for some odd reason, does not work, do the following. Shut down the system and unplug your modem. Plug in your modem and let it boot up completely, Once it is finished, start up your computer. Youd should have it up and running. I even have a multiport and wireless router running with no problem. Ubuntu immediately detected my wifi and connected. Try it.

Embedding Python In Apache2 With mod_python (Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/CentOS, Mandriva, OpenSUSE) This tutorial shows how to install and use mod_python on various distributions (Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/CentOS, Mandriva, OpenSUSE) with Apache2. mod_python is an Apache module that embeds the Python interpreter within the server. It allows you to write web-based applications in Python that will run many times faster than traditional CGI and will have access to advanced features such as ability to retain database connections and other data between hits and access to Apache internals. • Installing And Using OpenVZ On Fedora 9

Installing And Using OpenVZ On Fedora 9 In this HowTo I will describe how to prepare a Fedora 9 server for OpenVZ. With OpenVZ you can create multiple Virtual Private Servers (VPS) on the same hardware, similar to Xen and the Linux Vserver project. OpenVZ is the open-source branch of Virtuozzo, a commercial virtualization solution used by many providers that offer virtual servers. The OpenVZ kernel patch is licensed under the GPL license, and the user-level tools are under the QPL license. Read more... - 3 days ago

Virtual Hosting With Proftpd And MySQL (Incl. Quota) On Fedora 9 This document describes how to install a Proftpd server that uses virtual users from a MySQL database instead of real system users. This is much more performant and allows to have thousands of ftp users on a single machine. In addition to that I will show the use of quota with this setup. Read more... - 7 days ago
