With the US House of Representatives approval, the SCHIP has been extended to March of 2009. The program currently provides about 60,000 children in the state with Mississippi health insurance and the extension will guarantee access to federal funds to continue running the program. The program's temporary extension until 2009 is quick resolution between the democratic and republican parties. The extension is a temporary victory for the republican. They can now avoid a major focal point for debate in the 2008 Presidential Elections in November but the topic of socialized medical insurance will not be completely ignored. The state of Mississippi has been experiencing problems covering their expenses in the program. For every 17 cents the state allocates toward the program, the federal government provides 83 cents. But the state is expecting a deficit of $11 million due to the lack of funding from the government. The support from the federal government is based on the number of uninsured children throughout each state. The national average of uninsured children per state is 11% though Mississippi is experiencing a rate of about 13%. Although the extension will aid cover many children without health insurance, many children will still be left without any from of healthcare. The two plans vetoed by President Bush sought to extend coverage to many more uninsured Americans but the plans were said to be flawed. Hopefully, a better plan can be constructed and implemented by March of 2009.
