Connecticut Driver’s Education Requirements

Teens in the state of Connecticut have rules and restrictions that they must meet before they will be allowed to legally get behind the wheel of a car. These rules include minimum age requirements for those they are driving, a minimum amount of hours that the student must have under his/her belt before they can apply for a learner's permit, and rules that govern the first six months of driving with a learner's permit. While this may seem over-the-top, it is actually a great way to ensure that the teen driver has a grasp on the consequences of not driving carefully.

The law requires that teens have a minimum of 20 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training. This training can be done by a parent/step parent, legal guardian, or spouse of a minor married applicant, as long as the person is at least 20 years old and has at least 4 years of licensed driving experience. At-home training should be done with the instructor researching the state's driving requirements as well. Teens in Connecticut must also complete eight hours of classroom training, 4 hours of which includes information on drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

Teens must be at least 16 years old before they can obtain their learner's permit. This is slightly older than the average age for a first-time permit holder, which in most states is between 15 years old and 15 years, 9 months old. This age requirement must be met in order to drive, and both proof of age and proof of learning/instruction is required before they can obtain their learner's permit.
