defamiliarization seeing the trees for the forest Hawaii in spring light

What matters to a poem?

Have you ever wondered what matters to a poem?

Do you think it intends to be obscure?

Do you believe a poet means to appear uppity and sophisticated beyond a casual reader's ability to understand her soaring thoughts?

Miller Williams, in his book, Making a Poem says, "What we have to ask of the poem is that it work, that it offer us an experience that we can believe is a part of our world. That it be, in a word, honest."

Perhaps a poem, like you, wishes to be heard, nothing more. No judgment. No dissemblage. No philosophy.

Like a ray of sunlight, resting, reflecting, absorbing a spring aspen leaf. Experiencing green and... offering sustenance and...

Interacting letters linked to words to sentences to verses illuminating pictures

film strips of insight.

Thanks Shalini!  And thanks for visiting.  I think you are my first at this Hub- well, at least my first comment. I appreciate you.

Love poetry from the established to people who will never be considered publication material - who cares? A good poem is a good poem, exit the elitism.

Interesting thought:

you!

grin...

I like your perspective. If a poem is written 'over the audience's head' then what good is it? Great personification of poetry. You are a good delegate for the poetry genre.

I wonder if poems can be jealous of each other, or if they remain content. Maybe that would be a cool hubpage topic.

Wild-eyed typefaces

Integrate my expression:

Black shaping white.

Blake, what a great idea.  Did you write this Hub while I attended a dance convention with my youngest? Two of your Hubs sit, unopened, in my inbox.

Very interesting. Poetry is my favorite form of writing, though I've never considered it from the angle you've proposed. I like it! Thanks for sharing.

Hey Benjimeister, thanks for stopping by. I guess writing encourages unique viewpoints, haha. I appreciate your willingness to play!

Perhaps a poem wishes to be heard.

I wonder, Storytellersareus, whether poems seep out of our imagination and blot themselves on the page to remind us that we don't always allow our thoughts and feelings free expression. Poems just are. They don't need applause. (although that's always welcome!)

Works for me, Amanda.

sometimes

my poems only wish to be written down without judgment

there's something

affirming

about the very act

even the physical act of expression

the typing fingers

the pencil holding merge

physical with mental and emotional and

if I'm lucky maybe

spiritual

to arrive at something altogether

fresh and even

inspiring
