While constant ear ringing is not fatal, it can prove to be annoying if not extremely disturbing that your daily activities get disrupted. In the United States alone, around 12 million people are seriously affected by tinnitus to the extent that they are not able to live their normal lives. Indeed, while the unwanted sound is not seen as something serious from a medical perspective, it can prove to be debilitating if it is not dealt with properly.

Thus, here are some tips on how to handle the bothersome ringing noise:

Do not think about it as much as possible.

The unwanted sound appears to be louder if you are so conscious about it. Thus, try to ignore it as long as you can. Keep yourself busy to put your attention away from it. More often than not, the battle against the phantom noise is psychological.

Learn how to manage stress.

Stress tends to aggravate the ringing in your ears. Thus, it should be properly managed. Make sure that you find time to relax and relieve stress. Go out of the city, walk your dog, write down your feelings, talk to a friend, read some lines from your favorite book, or anything that works for you. It will not also hurt if you make use of treatments like counseling, hypnotherapy, and meditation.

Mask the unwanted sound.

Maskers are designed to make ringing in the ears less noticeable, and they usually come as white noise. They are especially helpful if you need to concentrate as well as if you have problems falling asleep because of the loudness of the unwanted sound. The white noise produced by your stereo or television set can be natural maskers. But for convenience and better quality, there are commercially available white noise maskers that come in CD and MP3 formats.

Watch your diet.

Certain foods may trigger tinnitus. They include salty foods and those that contain caffeine (e.g. chocolates, coffee, soda). Red wine, grain-based spirits, and cheese are also considered as problem foods. Furthermore, your diet should be especially rich in zinc, choline, protein, and the vitamins A, B, and E.

Educate yourself about constant ear ringing.

There is no better weapon than to make yourself familiar with the enemy. Also, educating yourself about tinnitus will help you know your options. Be sure that you make a sound judgment in the kind of information that you take in, though.
