Constipation is one of those things that you never really pay attention to until it hits you - and when it does, it hits you hard. There are a number of home remedies for constipation, some of which are natural and have been known of for centuries, and some of which have only emerged recently. The most effective constipation remedies, unfortunately, are things that you should be doing daily. Once you have constipation, it is better to try natural, laxative free remedies before going with more extreme measures. Let's go through what you can do if you're constipated.

Water

Significantly increase your water intake. As with fiber, most people do not enough water in their system. Increasing your intake of water, along with all of the other benefits, serves to make your bowel movements more regular. Drinking a lot of water can relieve constipation, so give it a try along with extra fiber.

Exercise

The physical act of moving around will loosen your stool. Many people who are constipated find that they are able to have a bowel movement after doing some walking, jogging, or weight lifting. Additionally, regular exercise will make your bowel movements more regular.

Natural Remedies

Increase your fiber intake. This is one of the best natural remedies for constipation. Dietary fiber is a great, natural method of relief in the short term and keeping you regular in the long term. Fiber works by either softening your stool if it is excessively hard, or solidifying your stool if there is too much liquid present in your system. Most people don't get enough fiber on a day to day basis, so you should increase your daily intake right away. When you're constipated, it's okay to "overload" your system with fiber. You can either do this by eating bran and certain types of leafy green vegetables, or by using fiber supplements. If you need to take in a lot of fiber in a short amount of time, it's fine to use a supplement.

Most people who are constipated find that by doing these three things, they are able to remedy their condition. However, if none of these things work, then it's time to try something that's a little tougher on your system.

Prune juice

A few glasses of prune juice are actually an extremely powerful laxative. Most cases of constipation are relieved by prune juice if not by the above remedies.

Over the counter medication

If nothing else is working, there are a great deal of products designed to relieve constipation, including stool softeners. You should note that these laxatives are very hard on your system, and can lead to overuse and even abuse. Many doctors warn against the regular use of over the counter laxatives. If you are regularly constipated, it is recommended that you see a doctor about your condition.
