Consumer Advisory: McDonald's and the New Deal

I have a secret...
Anyone who's been "around" on Hub Pages and read my comments about McDonald's in particular, but most fast food places in general, knows that I am pretty disgusted with the state of fast food in America. The movie: "Supersize Me" helped open the eyes of millions who frequent McDonald's, (many on a daily basis,) and subject themselves to the high fat and sodium content of their food. You may have even heard me mention that I take my daughter to McDonald's 2-3 a year, if that. She goes a lot more often than that because of the grandparents, but hey, that's what grandparents are for, right?
I have a secret, though. I'm not proud, but the McDonald's Double Cheeseburger makes my mouth water. When it was discontinued from the dollar menu I went home, locked myself in the bathroom and cried.
Officially, they came out with word that the change was made because prices were going up, specifically because cheese had gotten more expensive. Yup, the most iconic of American trademarks cannot afford an extra five cents for two pieces of cheese per double burger. Beats me.
Now, take a look at that picture... is that even a picture of a McDouble?!? Because when I saw that picture I thought, "I don't care if it's a buck, I ain't eating it." Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting my veggies in, but when I go to McDonald's as infrequently as I do, veggies are the last thing on my mind. Henceforth, for over a year, I wouldn't touch the McDouble with a ten foot pole.
Imagine my surprise when I saw a young man I worked with eating my beloved double cheeseburger in the break room. "What is that?!?," I was drooling slightly as he held it out for all to behold. "It's the new dollar McDouble. It's on the dollar menu."
Really? Hm, because that picture up above looks nothing like my guilty, sinful, pleasurable, treasure... what's going on here? So, after I got home, put my daughter to bed and turned all the lights out I went to www.mcdonalds.com and looked it up. For sure, the new McDouble is a double cheeseburger with only one slice of cheese, as opposed to two on the original double cheeseburger.
"Well, then that's not so bad," I thought to myself, vowing to enjoy one of these new treasures the very next day.
I don't know if the kids down at the local McDonald's didn't get the memo, but when I ordered *my* McDouble, (and almost every one since,) there was two... count 'em TWO slices of cheese on it. Four minutes and thirty-two seconds later, hamburger grease, American cheese and little diced onions sliding around my inner-cheeks I gave up a silent gratitude to my co-worker and the rain that kept me indoors in order to witness such a miracle as McDonald's new, (old) deal.

Sorry - but we have Five Guys in NJ - their burgers are just like the ones I make on my own BBQ and even better - haven't stepped in McDonalds or Burger Kings since......it does look good though.....
Sorry but, when it comes to fast food McDonalds is on the bottom of my list. I took the kids a few months ago and couldn't believe how much it was. Never mind that I hate the taste of their food. We have a Wendy's near us and I find it tastes so much better. I also believe I typically feed the family at Wendy's for like $20-$25. McDonalds was over $30 that day. A Sonic just moved in a few towns over I can't wait to give that a try.
I feel your pain...
I know McDonalds is so bad for you, and if you've been eating healthy, it really tastes awful when you have a double cheeseburger for the first time in awhile..
but I still find myself craving it sometimes,
what's up with that?
I limit myself at McDonald. I have gained too much weight.
As for Salt, I thought salt was only a problem when you have high blood pressure? Everyone wants to limit salt intake on children, but I do not know if it is warranted.
Actually, when I was dieting, I ate the meat and cut out the bread, and lost weight. I think breads and starchy foods is as bad or worse than a limit amount of fat.
To make things worse, check out the fat content of their chicken sandwich. It is as high of fat content, and as much calories. My wife was disillusioned and mad when she stated reading the facts of these food. Their chicken, which is supposed to be healthy is worse than their hamburgers.
Keep on Hubbing!
Once in a while I will treat my son to 2 double cheeseburgers (he likes them with just the cheese) and I will splurge and get a couple of their berry pies...am a sucker for those LOL
Fast food is very rare with my husband and I. Usually only eat it if we're far away from home on a day trip or something. Otherwise, it's home cooked.
Well at least yer honest. LOL Hey have you tried their new angus burgers? oh man are they great.
Aya Katz: *lol* Yeah, really! Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, Aya Katz, I really appreciate it.
SimeyC: Yeah... but can you buy one of their burgers for a buck? Thanks for coming by and taking the time to comment, if I'm ever in your neck of the woods I'll have to try a Five Guys burger!
jim10: I hear you jim10! I try to order exclusively off the dollar menu. (Though every now and then I will splurge, point in case, see below...) Man... if you've never had Sonic before you are IN FOR A TREAT! We don't have them at too many places here in the Midwest, but when I lived in California for awhile Sonic and Carl's Jr. became fast favorites of mine.
elisabethkcmo: My roommate swears that fast food places have high concentrations of chemical compounds that are known to be mildly addictive in humans. I believe her. I'm not saying it's true or nothing... but you can draw your own conclusions from there. :) Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, I really appreciate it.
eovery: I don't think you want to get into a debate with me about cutting out bread and carbs to lose weight. I positively detest that new dieting trend, I think the idea of cutting the most important food group out of your diet entirely to be ridiculous! However, since we're talking about eating at McDonald's I don't really think we're getting into the health concerns too heavily ;) I think limiting salt intake is a good idea for everyone... All good things in moderation, know what I mean? When it comes to kids, I think it's more of an issue of getting them used to tasting their actual food rather than the sauces or seasonings, (mainly salt,) that we slather it in. I wonder how much of the fat content in their chicken sandwiches is due to the mayonnaise, (speaking of slathering,) they put on it... if we all just asked them to hold the mayo it actually might be more healthy than their burgers, (which isn't saying much!,) I'm not sure though. As always, I love hearing from you eovery, thanks for taking the time to come by and comment! I really appreciate it.
Enelle Lamb: Aw... you're a good mom, Enelle Lamb! Man, you guys are lucky... they only make the apple pies here, no more berry ones. I *loved* those when I was a kid!
Godslittlechild: We usually go out to fast food for those reasons as well. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, I appreciate it!
ralwus: LOL... yeah... you guys are the only people I've admitted my double cheeseburger addiction to. Dude... those angus burgers are insanely great. Too much though... I thought I was gonna die after I ate a medium value meal, usually I only buy things on the dollar menu, but when those came out I decided to splurge! Thanks so much for taking the time out to read and comment, I really appreciate it, ralwus!

Sorry I didn't respond to these sooner, I honestly didn't think this many people would comment on my silly McDonald's hub! Thanks to everyone so far who's commented, I really appreciate it. I love hearing from my fellow hubbers and readers!
There is a McDonalds outlet within walking distance of where I live. In the vicinity are Pizza Hut and KFC too! But ... for a dollar and a half you can get a thundering Chinese meal at the Great Wall Cafe! Drool!
quicksand: You win! Hands down, no one else can top that. $1.50 for an entire Chinese meal?!? You have to be the luckiest folks in the world. Ya'all should go over there and thank them for their awesomeness. A buck fifty! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to share with us. That's fantastic!
