Unrealistic Consumers

This hub is to bring to everyone's attention, what we as dealers face each and everyday from consumers. They say we make up the rules, but in reality the consumer makes his or hers buying experience. We try to make it as easy as possible, but there are still consumers out there that just don't get it. Feel free to comment, if you agree or disagree.

World's worst consumers, according to the dealer side:

So, here we go. We have all the information on the Internet about how much we pay for each new vehicle. Case in point, I advertise all my prices at invoice minus any available rebate for the that vehicle. IT'S PUBLIC INFORMATION! So we get a call, on a specific car and they happen to live 70 miles from the dealership. So why is he calling me? I think I already advertised the best price and he found it! We have an easy one coming in tonight I tell my salesperson. NOT SO FAST! This example is a classic case of ignorance. The buyer comes in and offers me what CARS DIRECT has on the website, $22,000, we on the other hand offered $24,100. So we go on CARS DIRCT and low and behold, the suggested sale price is exactly what we offered.( He forgot to add some options) His response, is "Never Mind, I just want to pay what I want to pay! That is the ignorance!!! If you're going to use the net to buy a car, play by the rules, don't make up your own.

Here's another one:

Can you really buy a RX-8 R3 New for $26,000 out the door? This consumer told me if I go to the RX-8 Forums you will find them there??? You can't buy a new car from a car club forum.. I asked him what dealer, he tells me how much commission are you going to pay me. He needs to get a dealers license!!! That twists me up...

So I list all my pre-owned vehicles on AutoTrader and Cars.com and that of course makes us post our best prices. I have a RAV 4 for $18694 on this site and I am the lowest price on the site with the same exact miles.. You think they notice that it's a great buy.. Here is the TWISTER, they offered me $16,500 for it and to top it off, they live 1,000 miles away. They just don't know a deal when it smack them in the face.

Ready for this! I have several vehicles that are in stock that have been here for 70 days. I priced them at the amount we own them for. This twist me up, I got someone offering me the price out the door. Come on! We have to include tax, tag and title when that happens, that means that we would of have to sell it for $1800 less than we own it for. He needs to get a wholesale license.

Here's a good email offer: (actual email correspondence, names have been removed to protect the innocent)

Consumer,

I have a 2008 chevy 1500 LT 4x4 with 19,000 miles on it....6 inch lift with 2inch t wheels..ll’ll giveyou $10,000 and my truck for this truck

Dealer:

Thanks for the offer, we do appreciate it. In order for me to even consider this offer; we need to see your trade in. When can you bring it by?

Consumer:

Well without any consideration at all.....that is a long drive.....I told you specifically what I had....I wouldn't try to lie to you ....then drive all the way over there for you to see something different......I pulled your truck...and my truck on Kelly Blue Book and there is a $10,000 difference....which I am offering in cash...or however you want it...When you can consider a trade with me...let me know....and I'll drive over

Dealer:

Quick question, did you look at Kelley Blue Book retail for mine or are you figuring Kelley Blue Book Trade in? If you are figuring trade in, we will unable to even get close. I don’t think any dealer sells their vehicles for Kelley Blue Trade in value.

Consumer:

never mind then......I guess in this economy my cash doesn't mean a thing......I'll find a deal on one...

Dealer:

Yes it does mean something (your cash), but at the same time, we would like to stay in business too.

Good luck with your Endeavors and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Next!

We were punked on this one!!!

A couple drive 60 miles to our dealership to take a look at an Edge we had on the internet for a great price. Must have been, they found it and called us. They came in, test drove and agreed to price and all we had to do was add window tint. So we write it up and send them to finance. In finance, they get all the info they wanted and say, "we want to sleep on it overnight", mind you it is very uncomfortable to sleep on a car. Now prior to this, they had mentioned to the salesperson the reason they are buying pre-owned to save money. We called them today and the try to be evasive and finally the husband says, we purchased a new one. What a slap in the face.. That twist me up ! Keep it real if you want it to be real.

This one takes the cake!

Mr.Jones calls be the day before to make me aware that he will be in the following morning to take a look a Lincoln. I said great and we set an appointment for him to stop in the next morning. This guy was great, easy to talk with a great personality. He fell in love with the Navigator over the other vehicle of choice, the MKT. He was happy when he left and took the vehicle home. 3 weeks later, the guy tubes us on the survey. It read, my wife is 4'11" and she hates the vehicle. Like this is our fault!! So the several days pass and the wife stops by the dealership and asked to speak the owner. She proceeds to tell the owner how we were thieves and we used high pressured tactics for her husband to sign. After, several hours of conversation, and I will tell you this, she was calling us everything under the sun, she finally came out and said the her husband won the lottery and he has done this type of thing several times before. I almost blew up in her face!! But we remained calm and collected and gave this woman all the cancellations of warranties and gap insurance because the husband already traded the Navigator. Go figure!!! This customer is twisted up themselves.

What are we doing wrong!

You should have done what you said you would when I purchased the car. You still have a chance to get me to change my mind about the dealership. Just get me the key and remote you promised me. It will save you thousands in bad publicity.

Yep and this is just why every time someone ask me if I like my car I tell them I would never buy another one form your dealership. Lies to sell the car but don't take care of the customer after.

My wife has a Mazda Tribute and is in the market for a new one. Trouble is you did not take care of me with the last car I bought from you so I will not deal there again. To bad you lost another sale for the price of a replacement key.

The Happy Customer

The Brighter Side for Auto Dealers

I just had a customer who was looking for a morphodite (unusual vehicle) and it took me 2 long days to find it . After the calling 3 different dealers to get this truck with no success, I was down to the last dealer some 800 miles from us. The only problem, the truck was $1800 more than the price that we agreed on and we had to flatbed this truck back to our dealer for an additional $1000. Here is the good stuff, throughout the entire process, this customer had understanding and accepted the additional cost of getting this truck for him. This was a happy ending to a tough deal, but we made it happen for him and for us.

Beautiful folks came down from Central Florida.  They did all their research online, came in look at the vehicle, it was perfect and what they wanted.  Did not ask about the internet price, know what the trade was worth and left here in their new vehicle.  That's what the internet is about..  Everyone is happy!!!
