Though Rugs have existed for a very long time, contemporary rugs are a fairly new development in home furnishing. The term contemporary refers to the time period that is relevant to the present era. What is thought of as contemporary design became popular in the middle of the twentieth century in the 1950s and 1960s. In context to contemporary rugs, the term “modern” rugs denote the same mental image.

Contemporary style began in Europe before it was embraced by America. In contemporary designed homes, and transitively their rugs, the lines are normally straight or curved. Due to the proximity of this era with the rush to outer space, many of the lines are meant to imitate lines of airplanes and space ships. This is an attempt to make the furniture and rugs aerodynamic, as if they could blast off into space at any moment.

One of the interesting things about contemporary design is that two of its characteristics contradict one another. Contemporary design is characterized by both angular, hard straight lines, and soft, curved edges. Both of these are very popular with rugs, and they both show up quite regularly when searching for rugs. Though contemporary rugs are diverse, they do not normally possess both hard angular lines. Though both can successfully be used in contemporary space, in a single piece as the two different ideals normally clash, though of course there are a myriad of exceptions.

Modern Rugs Fit Comtemporary Ideals

Contemporary design, including its rugs, is not really limited by colors. Contemporary rugs come in every color of the rainbow. During the mid-century the most popular colors were turquoise, browns, cream, oranges and beiges, and these were the colors you would find most frequently on them. As time progressed, vibrant tones became more popular. Today, you can find rugs in almost every shade, from black and grey to light pinks and purples. Its color palette is what makes contemporary design so versatile and well-appreciated.

Contemporary rugs, like with the majority of contemporary style, have clean, modern lines which makes a clean break from a more fussy, ornate style which was previously popular. In modern rugs stripes and blocks of color are commonly used. The designs are normally eye-catching, but in a clean and exciting way, rather than an older, formal rug.

These rugs are usually used to complement other forms of modern design in a room. Though they often act as a striking center-piece, they also can serve a purpose a simple anchor of the room which does not draw attention yet holds and centers the room. Some rugs are so simple that the rug is just a single block of color.

Shag Rugs

A subset of contemporary rugs is shag carpets or shag rugs. These carpets are characterized by an extremely high pile with a shaggy texture. These originally became popularized in the nineteen-seventies and have remained on the market as a niche, retro item. Due to their high comfort level, they are popular in bedrooms and there is a high density of them in college dorms. Due to their already intense texture, most shag rugs remain mono-chromatic in coloring as to not overwhelm the senses of the user.

Some say that contemporary design is harsh and cold. In many settings, a rug can help fix this problem with a luxurious pile. A rugs primary usage is to add comfort and warmth to a room, and with contemporary spaces this is especially necessary. Obviously, this had been extremely successful as you can find contemporary rugs in almost every household.

Ironically, some modern rugs are already out of style. This should not come as a huge surprise, as these rugs originated in the nineteen seventies. But as the market changes, so do the type of contemporary rugs available. Like I mentioned before, the primary colors of the rugs have changed dramatically since the seventies. In fact, some designs would be perceived by the majority of modern viewers as extremely tacky. But of course, manufacturers have adapted, and contemporary rugs still remain very important in the rug market.

Contemporary rugs have grown so ubiquitous in the rug market that the majority of rug manufacturers make some type of design, though, as was mentioned before, the term contemporary spans such a broad base of different types and styles, what one may think of as a contemporary rug may not match what another thinks. Some high profile rug manufacturers include Calvin Klein, Adny Warhol, Chandra Rugs, Sphinx Rugs, Shaw Rugs, Nourison Rugs and even Momeni Rugs.
