You are at work on a normal day, when suddenly your pulse races and it feels as if the walls are closing in on you. Sound familiar? You are just one of many people who suffer from panic attacks.
Although symptoms can be widely different from person-to-person, the sense of fear and anxiety is a common thread. For someone who has these attacks often, it can seem like they control the person's life. This does not have to be true. Using the tips below, you will finally be able to control panic attack.
Peace & Quiet: External stimuli prevent any kind of calm and tranquility. When you start to get those anxious feelings, immediately seek out the first quiet place you can find. There are many small, out-of-the-way areas in most locations that serve this purpose. Once you are in a peaceful, quiet place you can stop focusing on everything and everyone around you, and just focus on yourself.
Shut Your Eyes: If you are looking around constantly, and seeing possible triggers (see below), then it becomes impossible to concentrate. Start the relaxation process by closing your eyes. At this point, you will be in your own world. In the darkness, you can begin to focus.
Focus: Turn your focus inward. Do your best not to think about anything other than relaxation. If you know some meditation techniques, use them to channel your thoughts. Think about relaxing each part of your body. Do not listen to anyone or anything other than yourself.
Just Breathe: Never underestimate the power of deep breathing. Try to control any impulses to breathe faster. Take slow, deep breaths through your nose and out your mouth. Listen to just the sounds of the breathing, and use that to gain even more focus. Many women learn Lamaze breathing during pregnancy. This is another method to stop the anxiety before it gets worse.
ID Your Triggers: Many panic attacks have clear triggers, whether they are certain situations or general stress. Identify as many triggers as you can and avoid them whenever possible. It might help to keep a diary of your attacks. Writing down the dates, times, and descriptions of your attacks could help you notice triggers that you never noticed before.
See a Doctor: Have you ever been actually diagnosed with panic attacks? Be sure to see a doctor and confirm that the symptoms you have are due to panic attacks, and not some more serious medical condition. Do not be afraid to try anti-anxiety medications. For some people, medication is the only way to control their attacks. Also, seeing a psychologist can relieve stress and help you deal with underlying issues that contribute to your attacks.
No matter which of the tips you use, each one will help you if you have a panic attack. There is no true cure, but the more in-tune you are with your body, the better you will be able to stop an attack before it even starts. This is a disease of the mind as much as of the body, and your mind is entirely your own.
