It can be disheartening visiting local animal shelters and witnessing all of those adorable canines with cute puppy dog eyes and pleading expressions. Even if you came to volunteer your services or leave some a few toys for the pets – it’s easy to become hooked.

When most animal lovers visit an animal shelter, many have quite a difficult time saying “No” to bringing a cute and cuddly pet home. Most animal lovers are also considered to be gullible when it comes to rescue animals that long for a family and home to spend the rest of their lives with. I became hooked after volunteering at a local animal rescue shelter. It only took me a moment or two before I fell in love with every animal I saw.

As a matter of fact, I have a difficult time saying “No”, when looking into the precious eyes of a pet dog wearing dog clothes. My name is always on the top of animal foster, animal rescues, and animal shelter lists. Today, I have four dogs and five cats. After buying dog toys, pet food and animal treats, I barely have enough time to do my own grocery shopping.

Unfortunately, many animal lover newbie’s will bring home a new pup who suffers from behavioral problems. Many fail to realize that most rescue animals have problems with behavior because they experienced abuse and neglect. These types of animals tend to have issues with socializing, so training is imperative. These animals have to be re-socialized before they can be put up for adoption. Dog toys are a favorite way for many trainers to bond with these frightened animals.

Rescue dogs have often lost their natural sense of trust and they may have strong territorial behaviors about food. Plus, they can be suspicious of any strangers that try to come near them. These types of animals tend to growl, bark and snap because of their fear and previous conditioning. Dog toys come in very handy at this point. When a reaction is noted to a certain toy, it will be used to aid the training program by gaining the dog’s trust and interest.

If you are nurturing one or more of the rescue dogs to aid in their socialization process, keep in mind, their nervousness and avoidance of people derives from negative incidents in their previous life. Make sure that you don’t yell at them. Simply offer them praise for the desired behavior, this will keep them calm. Try utilizing dog treats and a variety of plush dog toys. This will give your pet a sense of security and increase their level of confidence.

People who work at animal shelters make sure that neglected animals find a good home. Time is devoted in socialization and rehab sessions to help improve a dog’s behavior. Eventually these abandoned and abused dogs are able to adjust and learn good behavior. A well behaved dog is the perfect animal to adopt. You can find out further information about adopting a dog at your local animal rescue agency or you can surf the Internet.
