GUIDE

There are two different ways to convert music to ringtone.

Tools needed: iTunes and surely a music file!

OS: Mac OSX, XP and Vista.

1. Music that contains DRM and is bought through iTunes:

-Right click on the music in iTunes and select “Convert to Ringtone”.

2. Music not bought through iTunes:

Note: XP and Vista users click on “Properties” instead of “Get info”

-Right click on the music in iTunes and select “Get info”

-Go to “Options” tab

-Select “start time” and “stop time”

-Input a value for both intervals (Interval should not excede 40 secs)

-Click ok and close “Get info” window

-Now right click on that music again and select “Convert to AAC”

-Now you should find same music name file in itunes but with different length.

-Drag that file on to your desktop

-Delete the new AAC file from iTunes

-On your desktop, rename the extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r” of the file that was just dragged

-Drag the file back into iTunes library.

It should now show up in ringtone section. Just sync your iPhone and voila! If you run into any problems, just leave a comment and I will get back to you.

I've gone through all of the steps successfully except for the last one. I am unable to drag the converted file from my desktop to iTunes. A 'circle with a diagonal line' symbol shows up as I try to drag the file. Any suggestions?

I've just answered my own question! I just had to go to "File" then "Add to library" and the new .m4r file was added to my ringtone directory. THANKS A MILLION!!

When I add the file back to the library it adds to the original folder, not to the ringtone folder. Also, the extension is being renamed .m4r, but it's not actually changing the file format. Is this the problem? Please e-mail me at bpzeig@charter.net. Thanks

RE: Problems with renaming extension to .m4r

You have to make your computer display the extensions for all files. I can't remember how I did this, but I guess I went to Control Panel and somehow selected "Show extensions" or something like that. Then, just edit ".m4a" to ".m4r"

RE: Iain Clakr - Unable to drag to iPhone

After following the steps listed above, the new ringtone was in my iTunes Ringtones library. Then, I did a full Sync of my iPhone in order to get the new ringtone on my phone.

I followed the steps and like many others got stuck with changing the .m4a into an .m4r format, Jen you're a genius! For anyone else who's had the same problem go to 'control panel' - search: 'file extensions' - click 'Folder options (show or hide file extensions) - deselect the box 'hide extensions for known file types' - then when you go back to the file properties you can change it to a .m4r! Magic! Thanks Jen!

You need to go to folder options in my computer and select the view tab. Then uncheck the hide extensions for known file types then all your files will show the 3 extension letters and you can change them to whatever you want. ie m4r in this case.

It depends on which itunes version you have as to whether or not this works. I go through all the steps successfully but it won't 'import' from the desktop to itunes. Shame, but has anyone got it to actually work?
