Converting Measurements

 

In my last hub, I promised to come back with a list of measurements you use in everyday recipes with the equivalent measures broken down. I know I run to the world-wide-web each time I run into a measurement that I need to break down into smaller measures or even double or triple. So I figure there must be other people out there just like me. (That's a scary thought!) But to continue, I have pieced together a pretty informative guide which could be expanded, I'm sure. This will get us started, and maybe some of you can contribute to the list. I hope this proves useful to all of us.

  • 1 Package active dry yeast= 2 tsp. loose bulk yeast
  • 1/2 Cup butter= 1 stick
  • 2 Cups butter= 1 pound
  • 4 Cups all-purpose flour= 1 pound
  • 4-1/2 to 5 Cups sifted cake flour= 1 pound
  • 1 Square chocolate= 1 ounce
  • 1 Cup semisweet chocolate pieces= 1 (6oz) package
  • 4-1/4 Cups packed brown sugar= 1 pound
  • 4 Cups confectioners' sugar= 1 pound
  • 2 Cups granulated sugar= 1 pound
  • 3 Cups tapioca= 1 pound
  • Cereal & Breads
  • 1 Cup fine dry bread crumbs= 4 to 5 slices
  • 1 Cup soft bread crumbs= 2 slices
  • 1 Cup small bread cubes= 2 slices
  • 1 Cup fine cracker crumbs= 28 saltines
  • 1 Cup fine graham cracker crumbs= 15 crackers
  • 1 Cup vanilla wafer crumbs= 22 wafers
  • 1 Cup crushed corn flakes= 3 Cups uncrushed
  • 4 Cup cooked macaroni= 1 8oz. package
  • 3-1/2 Cup cooked rice= 1 Cup uncooked
  • Dairy
  • 1 Cup freshly grated cheese= 1/4 pound
  • 1 Cup cottage cheese= 1 8oz. carton
  • 1 Cup sour cream= 1 8oz. carton
  • 1 Cup whipped cream= 1/2 Cup heavy cream
  • 2/3 Cup evaporated milk= 1 small can
  • 1-2/3 Cup evaporated milk= 1 13oz. can
  • Fruit
  • 4 Cup sliced or chopped apples= 4 medium
  • 1 Cup mashed bananas= 3 medium
  • 2 Cup pitted cherries= 4 Cup unpitted
  • 3 Cup shredded coconut= 1/2 pound
  • 4 Cup cranberries= 1 pound
  • 1 Cup pitted dates= 1 8oz. package
  • 1 Cup candied fruit= 1 8oz. package
  • Juice of 1 lemon = 3 Tablespoons
  • Grated peel of 1 lemon = 1 teaspoon
  • Juice of 1 orange = about 1/3 cup
  • Grated peel of 1 orange = about 2 teaspoons
  • 4 Cups sliced peaches 8 medium
  • 2 Cups pitted prunes= 1 (12oz) package
  • 3 Cups raisins= 1 (15 oz) package
  • Meats
  • 4 Cups diced cooked chicken= 1 (5lb) chicken
  • 3 Cups diced cooked meat= 1 pound, cooked
  • 2 Cups ground cooked meat= 1 pound, cooked
  • Nuts
  • 1 Cup chopped nuts= 4 oz., shelled,1 pound, unshelled
  • Vegetables
  • 2 Cups cooked green beans= 1/2 lb. fresh or 1 (16 oz) can
  • 2-1/2 Cups lima beans/red beans= 1 Cup dried, cooked
  • 4 Cups shredded cabbage= 1 pound
  • 1 Cup grated carrots= 1 large
  • 1 4oz. can mushrooms= 1/2 pound, fresh
  • 1 Cup chopped onions= 1 large
  • 4 Cups sliced or diced potatoes= 4 medium raw potatoes
  • 2 Cups canned tomatoes= 1 (16oz) can
