Cooking with a Crock Pot

Easy Breezy Cooking

The crock pot is my friend. I can depend on this one kitchen aid to help me out in many cases.

Got a tough cut of meat? Let the Crock Pot tenderize it (just add seasoning to taste).

Got a tight schedule tomorrow? Easy, prepare today for tomorrow's dinner

I love the convenience of this little pot.

Tips for cooking with a Crock Pot

  • Stirring is not required
  • Meat cooks faster than vegetables on low heat
  • Place thinly sliced vegetables on the bottom or near the sides for best results
  • Browning pork and beef prior to the crock pot yields better results
  • Add milk, cream or sour cream only for the last 15 minutes
  • Divide the recommended herbs and spices. Add 1/2 at the beginning and 1/2 and the end of the cooking cycle
  • Dried beans need to be soaked and softened before adding to any recipe with sugar or acidy ingredients. Sugar and acid have a hardening affect on beans
There are many more tips I'm sure for rice and seafood, but I have not used the crock pot for those dishes.  Feel free to add them in the comments, or post a link to a hub that has these tips.

  • 2 tpbs flour
  • 1 can tomato soup (undiluted)

Pour the mixed ingredients over all

Sizes may be varied depending on the appetites!

Cook on low for 7 to 9 hours

Steak (with Gravy)

  • 2 or 3 lbs round steak
  • 2 pkg onion soup mix
  • 6 can cream of mushroom soup (10 oz)
  • Water (use the soup can to measure)
  • Trim the fat
  • Cut into 5 or 6 pieces
  • Place in the bottom of the Crock Pot
  • Add dry onion soup mix
  • Add soup and water
  • Cook on low for 6 - 8 hours

This recipe makes lots of gravy. MMMMM

Goes well with mashed potatoes

Thanks for the tips. There are a couple I didn't know about.

I'll bookmark for the recipes, also. See, you CAN cook!

A hill billy recipe?? Why am I not surprised?! LOL Thanks for the tips and recipes Duchess! I will have to try those sometime; I should really get my crockpot out more often. :-)

Judydianne, thanks for the encouragement. But really? My DH is much better - even at this. Everyone should have one (a DH that's a good cook, as well as the Crock Pot) don't you think?

Lady Go Go, do you think I am overdoing the Hill Billy thing? LOL Yes, you should dust it off every once in awhile. Get it working for you on your delivery days.

Elisabethkcmo, my pleasure!

Thanks for stopping in ladies.

Thanks for a good hub. I don't have a crock pot but I have a German clay pot called a Schlemmertopf (sp?) which goes in the oven and cooks very slowly - would do these recipes nicely.

Yes Catherine, I think the recipes would work nicely. I'm just not 100% about the time. You'd have to use your best "guesstimate"

Thanks Duchess. Today is Friday, which is grocery shopping day for me. I was thinking of trying a crock-pot meat loaf recipe, but I think I'll try your Hill Billy Casserole instead. What a confluence of the stars, for you to write this and me to read this just as I was hauling out the old crock pot and dusting it off now that summer's over!

Funny you should mention the stars. Last evening me and my "boys" were all outside enjoying a beautiful evening. We all mentioned how beautiful the clear sky was and how amazing that God was providing us with a show of at least a "quaddrillion" stars. We discussed at length how many that was, but gave up not knowing.

I believe they must have been shining just for you.

I hope you enjoy this recipe!

I also like crock pots!

advisor4qb, we have 3 in our house of varying sizes. Sometimes we use them all if we are entertaining (I have a large family).

They are one of the best kitchen aids ever invented. One more of those "why didn't I think of that?" items to add to my list.

:)

I also have more than one crockpot and I love them! They are most certainly time and energy savers!

Ah, that's one aspect I hadn't thought of. I wonder, does using a crock pot actually save on electricity as well?

Thanks Godslittlechild

Duchess, thanks for the crock pot tips. They are very helpful. I have two crock pots, one medium size and one large size for family gatherings and holidays, but I don't use them as much as I should. These tips will give me the insentive to take them out! Thanks again.

My pleasure Rubee. Take them out, dust them off, choose a recipe and voila!

Hi Duchess, I left you a Comment before this one and I don't see it listed here. I like to cook too, on sunday mornings sometimes. my wife likes that very much and she likes my cooking too, haha. Thanks for becoming my contact, my follower or fan or whatever. I'm your fan too of course. You have great hubs.

Hi NewHorizons. You did indeed leave me a comment. It was left (and is listed) under my list of fans. But I certainly do thank you for taking the time to come back to this particular hub to make sure I got your message :)

Thank you and I'm sure your wife enjoys it when you cook! I know I enjoy it very much when my husband cooks.
