Copper sinks have been around for centuries, but now they are growing in popularity around the world as an alternative to ceramic, stainless steel or porcelain sinks.

Why Copper?

Appearance

Copper is simply a beautiful, attractive metal, with a homely, distinguished feel that is both traditional and pleasant. Sinks made from copper are an increasingly popular choice in homes because of their wonderful appearance. Not only are they usually handmade, and thus a fine work of craftsmanship, having one is also an interesting alternative the usual, everyday ceramic or stainless steel sink, which dominates the market. They are already very popular in the USA and now their popularity is spreading throughout Europe and even further afield.

Hygienic

Although its main selling point is its rustic, attractive appearance, copper sinks are actually more hygienic than conventional sinks. Why is that? Well, it is because copper is far more hostile to germs and bacteria than stainless steel is. When wet, copper is an antimicrobial and antibacterial substance which kills germs on its surface – in fact copper was recently accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency in the USA for use in protective environments such as hospital doorknobs, arm rests, bed rails, and other features. This is another influential reason for going copper.

Sink Maintenance

Cleaning

If you are someone who uses a lot of antibacterial and disinfectant spray in your kitchen, your cleaning habits will probably change once your new sink has arrived! Chemical cleaning sprays can actually cause harm and damage the surface of copper, but you do not need to worry about learning a complicated new leaning process: simple water and soap will do. You should also dry off your sink with a soft cloth every so often.

Renaissance Wax

As you might have heard, copper develops a new colouration, or “patina”, over time as it is exposed to oxygen. Apart from cleaning your copper sink as described above, you might also want to use Renaissance Wax to polish your sink and preserve the shiny copper finish. Renaissance Wax was originally developed to preserve museum artifacts from the harmful chemicals in other cleaners, and the premise with cleaning your copper sink is exactly the same.

Things You Should Know

Patina

It is a myth that copper discolours over time. What actually happens is that is develops a patina. This happens because it oxidises. A patina is actually an attractive colouration that develops in several shades of pink and brown, and enhances the rustic feel of your sink.

Heat

Because copper has a lower melting point than a lot of other metals, it is worth being careful not to put boiling hot pots and pans in your sink and leave them there. Copper sinks would never get damaged or get a hole in them this way, but it could cause little dents or grooves which you might not be happy with.
