Coral is the third gem of Navaratna. Corals are classified as Precious Gemstones in Indian system of Gem classification. Coral represents planet Marsh because this red color gem resembles color of the planet according to Indian astrology. People of India use coral as Rashiratna and Graharatna. Coral is gemstone for Zodiac cancer. Kolkata is the biggest consumer of coral as Graharatna. It is also used as birth stone in Europe and America.

Coral is a gem that is not a stone but fossil. it is found in the sea. There are coral islands in many parts of the seas. We find this gem quality coral from the coral islands in shape of trees.

Spain, Morocco, Italy and Japan are the main sources of gem quality coral.

People love to use coral in Jewelry because of its vivid red color. It is also found in white color. Of course, white corals are less expensive.

Coral is rich in calcium and used for traeting patients with calcium defficiency.

Shaping, cutting and polishing of Coral

Generally, transparent gemstones are faceted and polished into cut stones.Coral is an opaque gem. It is never found as transparent. Hence, coral is always cut into cabochons and beads. some times it is also carved.

Big sized coral cabochons are used to make rings, pendants etc. Small sized ones are studded into ornaments with some other gemstones or diamonds. It is also used in India for making Navaratna jewelry.

Coral beads are used for stringing and making beaded jewelry. There are beautiful carvings in coral and those are also used in making fancy jewelry. People often use coral figures as decorative.

Jaipur, India is the main center for cutting and polishing coral. Taiwan and China also cuts it.

Jaipur jewelers also use coral for Kundan Meena Jadau jewelry. Kundan flaps are inlayed in coral.

Happy Makar Sankranti ! Makar Sankranti is a festival of India that comes on January 14 every year. The Sun goes to uttarayan (popularly spoken as utran) from this day according to Indian astrology. Yes, Kolkata cuts and polishes coral. Those are of very good quality but small in quantity. japanese corals are much better than Italian.

Thanks for comment. The artisan is polishing a ruby rough that is coated with black foreign material. Of course, this gemstone is not coral(in video Shaping gemstones).

I apologize that I do not have any video of coral manufacturing. However, most of the Gemstones are shaped in similar way.
