Confused about the Coraline DVD?

Confused About Which to Buy?

This page is intended to be a short guide for people who might be confused about which of the 3 Coraline DVD packages to buy. I'm guessing that if you found this page, you're trying to figure out which is the one for you (or your loved one.)

Here's how it breaks out:

All the DVD sets come with the movie Coraline in 3D and regular format. All the DVD sets come with four pairs of 3D glasses. All the DVD sets come with two basic features. The first is commentary with the music composer, Bruno Coulis, and the director, Henry Selick. Second, a Synopsis, which I don't really think anybody is going to be really excited about.

So that's pretty much it for the basic Coraline DVD. There is also a Collectors Edition DVD set which comes with two DVDs. I have seen somewhere that they will only be on sale for a limited time, but honestly, when was the last time that meant anything? OK, the Collectors Edition Coraline DVD comes with everything on the regular DVD, but also some special features worth looking at. There are Deleted Scenes (awesome!), a digital copy of the movie you can put on your iPod, Mac, or PC, and two mini-features about the making of the movie Coraline. Since this was a stop-motion animated film, I'm guessing that's going to be be pretty interesting.

Alright, now we move on to the Blu-Ray DVD set. This set includes everything in the Collectors Edition, but has (of course) a Blu-Ray copy of the movie, some Blu-Ray specific content (like a way to go online and share your favorite scenes), and another "making of" featurette. Here is a blog where there is further discussion about what is on what Coraline DVD.

So, which is the one to get? Welllllllll. You should totally get the Blu-Ray version and here's why. On Amazon, the Coraline single disk DVD is $15, the Collectors Edition is $19, and the Blu-Ray edition is $20. I don't know about you, but to me, the deleted scenes from the movie are worth the $4 clams to get you up to $19. And if you're going to spend $19 you might as well foot the extra buck to get the Blu-Ray version!
