Cordless Vacuum - A Guide
65The cordless vacuum by definition is a vacuum that runs on battery power and not via an electrical outlet like most vacuums. Typically the batteries are recharged after every use by placing the cordless vacuum back into it's recharging cradle. The standard voltage for the batteries are 12 and 24 volts. Cordless vacuums are generally used for small scale cleaning and not for vacuuming your entire house. Of course the real benefit of using one of these vacuums is the portability and being freed from the hassle of a cord. Most of us are probably familiar with the cordless handheld vacuum that seemed to rise to popularity in the 1980's, but today some have become more sophisticated and larger, but fear not, the old standard is still available.
Reasons To Own a Cordless Vacuum
There are many reasons that one might choose to own a cordless vacuum, among them being if you can actually spell it right. Vacuum and not Vaccuum. I struggle with this every time I write the word. Other more useful reasons would be:
- Cleaning your car
- Cleaning your television
- Cleaning spilled Cheerios
- Vacuuming around the kitty litter box
- Vacuuming your furniture and bed
These are a few uses among many that you will soon come up with once you own a cordless vacuum cleaner. Suddenly the ease of cleaning small spills or your furniture become apparent and not so much of a hassle and you might do it more often. You will more than likely come up with many more uses once you have a cordless handheld vacuum. Remember that there are upright cordless vacuums available as well. These are very handy for larger clean ups that would require you to bend down on the floor if you only had the handheld type.
Brand Name Cordless Vacuum Cleaners
Like with anything else that you want to purchase you will benefit greatly if you do your research beforehand. This will usually lead you to a brand name war and you thinking "is it really worth the price to get the brand name" and a lot of the times the answer is YES! From experience, the best cordless vacuums I have owned have been an Eureka cordless vacuum and a Shark cordless vacuum. Of course that is just my humble opinion and there is no scientific reason behind why I like those two best. For me they were the best performers and the longest lasting.
To find the one that will be right for you just read reviews and do your research and you will find the right one!
The Components
Cordless vacuums are lightweight and compact so they are perfect for your smaller everyday jobs. They each will have the basic components of a small electric motor powered by batteries, a suction fan, and a spot where the debris will collect. The collection bin should be easily detached from the vacuum itself to be emptied easily into the trash. The suction on cordless vacuums is significantly lower than their A/C counterparts and are best used for jobs where the debris being cleaned is lightweight such as dust or skin flakes, but they do work for cleaning up spilled cereal as well! They are even gentle enough to help clean up computer components to remove dust and other small electrical devices that may be delicate.

You're right about Eureka, they seem to make vacuums that are powerful and easy to use. I picked up one of their new upright cordless stick vacuums this summer and can't live without it!

Now if they would just operate by themselves to clean up after me, life would be perfect! I have not tried the cordless vacuum that you mentioned but may give it a try as I hate winding up the cords too. I guess I just need to face it, I hate housework.
