Cornhole - The Game

Cornhole(get your head out of the gutter) is a game that has gained popularity over the last few years. The basic strategy of the game is to throw bean bags towards a specially made board and have the bag land on it or go in the hole in the board and is kin to the game of horseshoes. Cornholingcan be played indoors or out, in leagues and/or tournaments at your favorite bar or in the back yard or at your local park. It is also very popular where ever tailgating is taking place!

The game is also known as Bags, Baggo or the Bag Tossing Game. The name Cornhole comes from the content of the bags. True Cornhole bags are made with a filling of feed corn. Therefore, when a bag is thrown and it goes in the hole, you have corn in the hole or Cornhole.

The history of the game is not really defined. Some say a farmer named Jebidiah Magillicutty invented the game back in the 1800's, or that it was a game that the Native Americans played. Either way, the game has deep roots in the Midwestern United States, mostly in Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina and Indiana, but the Cornholing fever is rapidly spreading!

Painting Your Boards

Of course, to some the building of the Cornhole boards is the easy part, but adding the finishing touches to the board is a different story. Take a deep breathe and relax....it is not that hard! And when you finish putting your favorite team logo or other design on your board, you will be glad that you did.

Below are the basic steps to painting your Cornhole boards and then actual photos of some great painted boards that may give your imagination a spark! Good luck and have fun!

  1. Prime your board - Put two coats of primer over your whole board and make sure you include the sides, bottom, the legs and everything underneath. I use Kilz Primer. It is the best out there!
  2. Paint the base color - Put on two coats of your base color.
  3. Paint your design and borders - Using the Shaggy method at the Cornhole Players Forum, paint your designs and border colors.
  4. Protect with polycrylic - Once all of your painting is done, put on six to ten coats of Minwax Polycrylic, sanding lightly once or twice in between coats. This will help protect your design and paint from being rubbed away by the bags.

And that is it! Now take a look at these awesome looking boards that have been painted by folks just like you!
