Cosmo's Brilliant Plan (or How to Score Halloween Candy)
71
♣ The following tale is fiction. Dogs should never EVER eat chocolate. ♣
This year, Cosmo (a cute but sneaky little pug) decided he was going to go trick-or-treating. He was fed up with sneaking bits and pieces of Halloween candy every year. This year, Cosmo was determined to have a huge stash of Halloween candy all his own. Usually he would sneak in after the kids went to sleep and was lucky enough to find a half-eaten Snickers bar and, just as he was about to chow down, Cody, the human boy who lived in the house, would wrestle it out of his paws going 'Hey, dogs aren't supposed to eat chocolate!".

Pfft. Cosmo was determined, no matter what they said. He had Chocolate Fever, and the only prescription was, well, chocolate. Cosmo decided the first thing to do was to get a costume, so he got a pirate costume, since he was, after all, plundering Halloween candy. Plus he always liked pirates and it was on sale.
Just then, Buffy wandered in, going "Whatcha doin'?" Cosmo rolled his eyes.
That little chihuahua always picked the worst times to wander into Cosmo's little world. Cosmo tried to hide his Halloween costume, which was difficult since he was already wearing it, having decided to try it on for the big night. Buffy wanted in, but Cosmo wasn't having it. She decided to rat him out, so Cosmo's only choice was to let Buffy help him score some Halloween candy too, although he liked to work alone. Buffy wanted to be Cinderella, so Cosmo got her a Cinderella costume.

The next thing they needed was something to haul their loot in.
They went to the store and casually strolled through the Halloween aisles. Every so often people would give them funny looks, but Cosmo just gave them 'the look' - The one that said 'Yeah, I am shopping for Halloween stuff, so what? Haven't you ever seen a dog Halloween shopping before?'
Cosmo got a scary-looking trick or treat bag, and Buffy chose a little one with a ladybug on it because she could use it when Halloween was over. They didn't dare linger any longer than was necessary, and they quickly paid for the bags and ran out of there. Then they decided to Google map which houses had the best candy and set Cosmo's plan into motion.

The Sniths at the end of the block always gave out Peeps pumpkins. Cosmo loved those, so he put them on his list. He also loved candy corn and remebered that those people across the street handed out those to trick-or-treaters. It could be risky though...the people who lived in that house were always chasing Cosmo from their yard. Well, maybe they wouldn't recoginze him!
Finally, Cosmo tried to remember which of his neighbors gave out the best chocolate. The Fosters on the cul-de-sac were known for giving out high quality goodies, but they were really good friends with Cosmo's family and were sure to recognize him.
Wait a minute! Last year, Cody's little sister Dakota managed to score some excellent fun size candy bars from a classmate's house two blocks over. Which one was it though? The brick house with the big pine tree in the yard, or the beige stucco house with the mesquite trees out front? "The pine tree house" said Buffy, scratching herself. She remembered because Dakota's little friend Mandy tired to pick her up and pet Buffy when she spotted her sniffing the flowers under the pine tree.
"Cool", thought Cosmo. Maybe Buffy would be of some use after all.
"Ahem" she said expectantly. Oh, yes...Buffy. Cosmo felt annoyed. Cosmo asked her what kind of candy she wanted. Buffy had a thing for chewy candy, so she told him to look for some caramel pumpkins. She also liked candy that did stuff like sizzling and popping in your mouth, so they looked for which houses gave out Pop Rocks. There was one - the cat lady four houses down.
"The CAT LADY?" said Cosmo, looking doubtful. Buffy stood her ground, because she had to get her little paws on some of those Pop Rocks.
Just then, Cody's mom came into the room, looking for the Halloween decorations. Specifically, that giant spider with jeweled eyes.
Cosmo quickly jumped off of Cody's desk, hoping Cody's mom wouldn't notice what was on the computer screen.
"Who's a good puppy" she said, petting Cosmo's head. Buffy got all jealous then, jumping up and down in that way that drove Cosmo crazy. "Oh, you too sweetie" said Cody's mom, petting her warmly, then dragging out a big cardboard box marked "Halloween Decorations".
Cosmo and Buffy retreated to the kitchen, looking for their supper. It was a brilliant plan, and Cosmo couldn't wait for Halloween to execute it. That night when he saw Cody munching on a peanut butter cup, he didn't even flinch.
