Will power corrupt our next president?

Barack Obama hasn't even taken office yet people are hailing him as the next Abraham Lincoln or Franklin Roosevelt. He has smart ideas to take us out of the worst messes we've seen in a long time. He has plans to restore America to its' former glory. He has assembled a crack team to help him. He is willing to forgive former enemies and detractors with cool grace. He wants the White House to be considered a family home for his idyllic family.

You can't help but wonder if this near almost godlike politician will be seduced by absolute power?

Right now Barack Obama is deemed our hope. However look back on recent history and see some men who were first considered saviours but who turned out to have a dark side. There was Bill Clinton who everyone thought would be the perfect president. True, the US did prosper under his two terms however he was involved in personal and private scandals. On a smaller scale there's Elliot Spitzer of New York and former GOP pick Sarah Palin. Both used their governorship to do whatever they pleased. The holier than thou ex New York State governor blasted crime rings and prostitution , all the while having his own little hooker on the side. Palin threw her power around to get people fired and give jobs to her inexperienced cronies.People elected them because they thought each candidate could help their state.. Instead both Spitzer and Palin put their state and constituents second while their own interests rose to first. Their agendas may have started out as pure and virtuous but ended up sordid and dirty.

Will Barack Obama fall prey to the dark seduction of not just power but absolute power? Will he be seduced by the lure of bribes from slick businessmen orlured by a bargain with a reptilian foreign head of state? Will he use his position as an excuse to stray from his wife? It's hard to say right now.

President elect Obama seems to be an old fashioned politician. He possesses the same values as our greatest politicians and founding fathers possessed. He believes that he can be a leader who will put his country and people ahead of himself instead of the opposite.

Could he ever be corrupted by the power that comes with his job? The answer right now is a resounding no. Let's hope he will remain the same as he did when he was the people's politician from Illinois . Incorruptible and pure.
