Farmhouse Retreat

The Antinoris, who have been growing grapes for 14 generations in Tuscany, recently opened this country resort on their family's estate. Fonte De Medici, in the heart of Chianti, highlights the family's wines with breathtaking views, and incredibly comfortable accomodations.

At Fonte De Medici, guests can stay in one of three farmhouses. Many rooms are beautifully decorated with modern conveniences like heated terra cotta floors, mini-kitchenettes, and sprawling bathrooms. The lovely Vermentino room was about $150 a night (quite a deal when compared to the equivalent accomodations in the Napa Valley). Guests are greeted with several bottles of Antinori wine, which can be enjoyed overlooking the pool and the endless views of vineyards, cypress treess, and rolling hills.

Guests can play tennis, mountain bike on the miles of country roads, enjoy the spa, and go wine tasting at the numerous neighboring vineyards.

Florence is only about 30 miles away. Instead of taking the Autostrada, we took the winding country road - the Chiantigiana - then past the town Badia a Passignano - built in 890 AD.

Though there are neighboring towns and restaurants, we really enjoyed the Trattoria de Fonte, right on the property of Fonte de Medici. I loved the gnocchi with stewed, blended zucchini and the Peppolini 2004 Chianti
